Strong Showing Despite Unlucky Skip AZUSA, CA-- Long Beach State women's soccer put forth a strong effort, both on offense and defense, but an unlucky skip pass back to the goalie led to an own goal and an exhibition loss 1-0 to NAIA powerhouse Azusa Pacific on Saturday night. The 49ers, who started seven underclassmen, outshot the No. 2-ranked Cougars 12 to 3, holding the game scoreless until the 68th minute. "I thought we played well tonight," said third-year Head Coach Peter Reynaud. "We played everyone I wanted to see. One bad mistake was all that really was." The Beach had ample opportunities to score after Heather Kindschi's pass back to Tara Gotthardt scored the only goal of the ballgame, the best coming in the 72nd minute. LBSU had two of its four corner kicks, but were unable to convert, as APU held on for the victory. The 49er defense continued a solid effort, holding Azusa Pacific to just one first half shot, and then two more on a corner kick sent in during the 61st minute, which Gotthardt was able to fist away. "The goalkeepers never had to make difficult saves. Our defense was very solid," continued Reynaud. Nine players wore the black and gold for the first time tonight, as Reynaud commented that Kat Avendano plus starters Erin Empting, Jen Robin and Brenna LaBine "all played well as freshmen." The Beach open the season next Friday by hosting San Diego at 4 p.m. after playing one more scrimmage, against Biola at 5 p.m. on Tuesday. "We certainly need to play more games together," said Reynaud whose team will play five NCAA Tournament teams, including three on the road, during the regular season, after playing to NAIA playoff teams in the pre-season. "We'll get better and better. These are tough away games. That is why we schedule these games." LBSU 0-0--0 |
