Long Beach State Picked Second in Big West IRVINE, CA --The Long Beach State women's volleyball team is picked to finish second in the Big West Conference, according to this year's pre-season coaches poll, released by the league office on Tuesday. LBSU (28-4 / 15-3 last season) received one first place vote and accumulated 85 points on the ballot, filled out by the ten head coaches in the league. Long Beach State placed second in the conference last season. UC Santa Barbara (30-3 / 18-0) landed four first place votes and a total of 96 points, good enough for a first place prediction. Pacific captured the remaining three first place votes, and was predicted to finish third in the conference. Long Beach State has captured seven conference crowns since 1991 and has never finished lower than fourth since the 1988 season as well. The No. 16-ranked 49ers open the 2003 campaign, Friday, Aug. 29 in the Mizuno Invitational versus Texas-Arlington at 7:30 in The Pyramid. Big West Conference Pre-Season Coaches Poll 1.
