49ers Ranked No. 16 in Pre-Season Poll 2003 Schedule Features Four Teams Ranked in Top 25
August 11, 2003 COLORADO SPRINGS CO -- The Long Beach State women's volleyball team is ranked No. 16 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Pre-Season Top 25 Poll, released earlier this afternoon.
Long Beach State is one of four Southern California teams ranked in the top-20.
The 49ers return seven players from last year's team that went 28-4 and a No. 14 final national ranking. Junior Erika Chidester highlights the core of returnees, after averaging 2.59 kills and 1.36 blocks per game, with a .380 hitting percentage last season.
The 2003 squad also features nine newcomers, including six freshman and three transfers.
Long Beach State will face four opponents ranked in the top-25, including No. 22 Texas on Aug. 30; No. 9 UC Santa Barbara on Oct. 18 and Nov. 14; No. 12 Georgia Tech on Nov. 28, and No. 24 California on Nov. 29.
The 49ers open the 2003 campaign, Friday, Aug. 29 in the Mizuno Invitational versus Texas-Arlington at 7:30 in The Pyramid.
