49ERS DEFEAT CAL POLY, 76-62 March 12, 2003 The 49ers jumped on the Mustangs early, leading 14-4 in the first four minutes of the contest. Cal Poly, which suspended six players prior to the game for breaking team rules, including one starter, pulled back to get within 25-24 at 5:21. The 49ers gave themselves some breathing room by out-scoring Cal Poly 13-2 in the final 2:32 of the half to take a 44-30 lead into the lockerroom. In the second half neither team could find the basket early on. Long Beach shot just .219 (7-32) from the field in the second half, but were an impressive 16-20 (.800) at the free throw line. Cal Poly was a little better, shooting .355 (11-31) in the second stanza. The Mustangs hung tough, trailing 56-48 at the eight minute mark after a layup by Courtney Uphoff. Long Beach then responded with a 10-4 run over the next three minutes to put the 49ers up 66-52 at 5:06. Cal Poly got no closer than nine points the remainder of the contest. Long Beach out-rebounded Cal Poly 53 to 48, with 23 of those rebounds coming on the offensive glass. Of Baker's team-high 14 rebounds, eight were offensive. Johnson finished with 10 rebounds and redshirt freshman CeCe Rush had a strong outing with seven points and a career-best nine rebounds. Senior Jinga Gosschalk finished with 14 points, hitting 4-7 from three-point range. The Mustangs Uphoff finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds, Megan Turner had 12 points and eight boards and Kari Duperon finished with 10 points and six assists. The 49ers move into the tournament semifinals on Friday afternoon at 2:30, where they will take on the winner between Pacific and UC Riverside.
