49ers Fall At Pepperdine, 87-73

Big Second Half Leads Pepperdine To Win The Waves slowly were able to pull away from the 49ers in the second half. Leading 35-31 at the half, Pepperdine scored the first four points of the half, and was able to increase its advantage to 50-38 at the 13:19 mark, only to see The Beach fight back to pull to within seven points, 57-50, at the 10:16 mark on a three-point play by Cody Pearson. The Waves then went on a 8-0 run over the next three-plus minutes to take a 65-50 lead at 7:01 and the 49ers would get no closer than nine points (66-57) the remainder of the contest. Pepperdine had five players in double digits, led by McGowan's 21. Shaun Davis, Alex Acker and Terrance Johnson all had 13 points and Jesse Pinegar added 12. Pepperdine shot .477 from the field for the game, but started slowly shooting just .387 (12-31) in the first half. The 49ers stayed in the game throughout with tough free throw shooting. LBSU connected on 22-25 (.880) of its free throw attempts and shot 14-29 (.483) from the field in the second half. The Waves proved too tough, ringing up 52 second half points. Freshman Kevin Houston had a career-high 10 points for the 49ers while Kevin Roberts added nine and Chris Jenkins, Cody Pearson and Louis Darby all had seven. Pepperdine used its heighth to out-rebound the 49ers 38-32, the first time all season the Beach has been beaten on the boards. Acker led the way with nine boards and Derrick Grubb added five. Marcel Jackson led the 49ers with seven rebounds and Roberts and Pearson had five each. Long Beach hurt its cause with 20 turnovers while the Waves had just six. The two teams played pretty evenly in the first half. with the largest margin just seven points (27-20, Waves). Hodges hit four consecutive free throws in the final 1:21 of the half to cut the 49er deficit to 35-31. Both teams shot poorly from the field in the half, as LBSU shot .333 (9-27) and Pepperdine .387 (12-31). The 49ers will next be in action on Tuesday, December 9 when they play at Minnesota at 5 pm Pacific Time. That game will be televised live on ESPN+PLUS.
