49ers Drop Heartbreaker to Colgate, 73-71

Long Beach State Falls to Colgate 73-71 in Final Non-Conference Game LONG BEACH, CA –In the 49ers' final non-conference game of the season, Long Beach State (2-7) fell to Colgate (6-4) 73-71 as Colgate's Alvin Reed sealed the victory with four free throws over the final 15 seconds. Kevin Roberts led The Beach with a season-high 24 points, the only 49er to score in double digits. Reed led the Red Raiders with 14 points, one of four Colgate players in double digits. The 49ers had numerous opportunties to take the lead in the closing minutes as the team's last chance came with 18 seconds remaining, and Colgate up 69-68, when Jibril Hodges was stripped of the ball by the Colgate defense. After being forced to foul, Reed made the the first two free throws to give Colgate a 71-68 advantage, before LBSU went back up the floor and Louis Darby was unable to draw the foul on a driving layup with eight seconds left. Reed then connected on two more free throws with 5.0 seconds left to seal the victory. The Red Raiders took a 69-68 lead with 1:24 remaining after a lay-up by Kendall Chones. Travon Free grabbed a career-high seven rebounds, while Roberts also picked up seven boards. The Beach shot 50% from the field and were 10-for-12 from the free throw line, shooting 83%. The Beach out-rebounded the Red Raiders 30-28 in the game. Chones picked up 12 points for Colgate, while Mark Linebaugh and Jon Foss added 11 and 10 points respectively. Colgate shot 49% from the field, and 94% from the free throw line, nailing 15-of-16 from the charity strip. Long Beach took its biggest lead of the game, 57-50, with 10:12 remaining, as Roberts capped off an 8-0 run with a slam dunk forcing a Colgate timeout. But the Red Raiders charged back with an 11-5 run of their own to close within 62-61, with 7:28 left to play. Long Beach State will open up Big West Conference play on Saturday, January 3, as they take on UC Santa Barbara at 7:30 pm in The Pyramid. |
