Long Beach State Defeats Cal State Stanislaus 71-62 Senior Kevin Roberts Picks up a Double-Double in the Win

LONG BEACH, CA--The Long Beach State (1-2) men's basketball team defeated Cal State Stanislaus (2-1) 71-62 Wednesday night at The Pyramid as senior Kevin Roberts led the 49ers with a double-double, picking up 17 points and 11 rebounds. LBSU shot a season-high 52% from the field as sophomore Jibril Hodges added 16 and junior Chris Jenkins had 15.
"We didn't do a good job towards the end of the game. We're a little inexperienced and need to control our turnovers," said LBSU Head Coach Larry Reynolds.
"We had a stong first half, but got tired in the second half," Reynolds added. "It was good to see Kevin Roberts step up and have a great game."
With 2:07 remaining in the game, Rick Fetter nailed a trey to bring the game to within six, 63-57, but The Beach would hit all six free throws to put the game away. LBSU led by as many as 24, as the 49ers held off a charging Warrior club.
The Beach opened the second half with a 12-2 run to push their lead to 51-28 with 14:44 remaining. Stanislaus charged back holding the 49ers scoreless for nearly five minutes, going on their own 13-0 run to bring the score to 54-43 with 9:52 remaining. A lay-up by Jibril Hodges broke the scoring drought for The Beach, but the Warriors went on another run to close the game to seven, 58-51, with 4:49 remaining. Hodges nailed a three to push The Beach's lead to ten, 61-51 with 3:59 left to play.
Stanislaus was led by Kevin Massey with 17 points and Rick Fetter with 13 points. The Warriors shot 35% from the field for the game and committed only 13 turnovers, compared to Long Beach's 20.
Long Beach State went into the halftime break up 39-23. The Beach shot 54% for the half compared to the Warriors 31%. Stanislaus nailed a trey to start the game but The Beach went on several runs to lead by as many as 18 points , 33-15, after two made free throws by Louis Darby with 4:48 left in the half.
The 49ers will next be in action on Saturday. December 6, when they travel to Malibu to take on Pepperdine for a game at 7:35 pm.
