49ers to Open Exhibition Season Saturday Hegarty Era Begins with Two Exhibitions
November 4, 2003
LONG BEACH, CA-- Long Beach State women's basketball will play two exhibitions at The Pyramid over the first half of November as the 49ers gear up to begin a new era under first year Head Coach Mary Hegarty.
LBSU will host the Play Mode All-Stars, the first of two collegiate all-star teams on Saturday, November 8 at 7:30 p.m. in The Pyramid. Love and Basketball will make its annual trip to The Pyramid on Saturday, November 15 at 3 p.m.
"It will be a good opportunity to stack up against other competition," said Hegarty. "Obviously we would like to win every competition we are involved in, but it's more important right now to prepare ourselves for the regular season. With a new system, I would rather our players to do a few things well, rather than overload them with everything all at once."
The 49ers begin the regular season at New Mexico State on November 21, before returning home to The Pyramid for their home opener with Eastern Washington on November 23. Two season tickets are $65 for adults and $45 for seniors and youth, and available by calling (562) 985-4949.
Hegarty begins her first season at The Beach after 10 successful seasons at Chapman University, where she compiled a 160-92 (.635) record. Hegarty developed the Chapman program into a perennial NCAA participant, as the Panthers competed in the NCAA Tournament in each of the previous three seasons, including a Sweet 16 appearance in 2002.
The Long Beach State has a rich tradion of women's basketball history, ranking in the top-10 for much of the 1980's, reaching 16 NCAA Tournaments, and winning 18 conference championships. |
