49ers Fall At Portland, 65-59 The 49ers, who trailed 24-17 at the half, got back into the game with some hot shooting by Hodges and Antoine Jackson. Hodges was 5-7 from three-point range, with four of those treys coming in the second half. Jackson scored all 12 of his points in the second half. "The guys did a good job of staying with what we needed them to do tonight," said head coach Larry Reynolds. "We had a streak late in the first half and up until the three-minute mark of the game where we were very much doing what we needed to do and executed fairly well. Jibril hit some big baskets for us tonight. Up until one-half hour before the game we weren't sure if he would even be able to play tonight." Hodges didn't practice on Friday night or participate in Saturday's shoot-around due to the flu. He didn't start the game, but entered the contest four minutes into the first half. Long Beach took its biggest lead of the contest, 40-36, at the 10:00 mark of the second half after a three-pointer by Mark Bowens. Portland battled back behind Wilson and Quick. Quick scored all 12 of his points in the second half and the Pilots hit five of six charity tosses in the final 0:50 seconds of the game. Hodges knocked down a three-pointer at the 4:38 mark to tie the game at 50-50. Quick then knocked down a three-pointer at 4:25 and the Pilots would never trail after that. Hodges kept the Beach in the game with another three, this time at the 1:11 mark, pulling the 49ers to within 60-57, but the 49ers ended up fouling down the stretch and Portland hit five of six to pull out the win. Kevin Roberts had 11 points for the 49ers and Cody Pearson chipped in with four points and a career-high 11 rebounds. Long Beach was 7-15 from 3-point range, but just 6-12 at the free throw line. For the second straight game the 49ers out-rebounded their opponent, 29 to 24. "We did a good job rebounding tonight," said Reynolds. "We were going after the ball when we missed and were aggressive on the defensive glass. Antoine really helped us out tonight. Cody also did a nice job finishing with 11 boards. We need our guys to be relentless on the defensive boards. Unfortunately, we just didn't make the plays at the end of the game." In the first half the Pilots raced to a 21-8 lead thanks to some hot outside shooting, before the 49ers made a run. LBSU used a 9-0 run over the next 4:17 to cut the deficit to 21-17 and get back in the contest. Roberts' three-pointer at 4:58 made the score 21-13, a back-door layup by Pearson and two free throws by Chris Jenkins cut the Pilot lead to 21-17 at the 3:21 mark. LBSU was able to out-rebound Portland 16-13 in the first half, but The Beach shot just .286 (6-21) from the field, while committing nine turnovers. Portland was able to score 13 first half points off LBSU turnovers, but shot just .375 (9-24) from the field. The 49ers return to action on Wednesday, December 3 as they host Cal State Stanislaus at 7:35 pm in The Pyrmaid in the home opener for The Beach.
