49ers Drop Season Opener to Aztecs Roberts Scores 13 Points in Loss
November 21, 2003 SAN DIEGO, CA -- The Long Beach State men's basketball team dropped its season opener, 74-44, to the San Diego State Aztecs Friday night at Cox Arena.
Kevin Roberts paced Long Beach State (0-1) with 13 points on 4-of-9 shooting from the field. Cody Pearson chipped in with six points and a team-high nine rebounds, while Lucian Graham added six points and four assists and Travon Free finished with eight points. Freshman Marcus Slaughter led the Aztecs (1-0) with 19 points, while transfer Wesley Stokes added 17 points, six assists and four steals.
The 49ers led 2-0 early on and held the Aztecs scoreless for the first four minutes of the half. Trailing 7-5 with 13:42 left, the 49ers hit a dry spell as the Aztecs went on an 18-0 run over the next 4:30 to take a 25-5 lead at the 9:12 mark. The 49ers committed 18 first half turnovers and shot just 6-28 (.214) from the field.
Long Beach State committed 26 turnovers overall, shot just .379 percent from the field (16-of-55) and a miserable 1-14 (.071) from 3-point range. The Aztecs shot .379 from the field, but were 10-28 from 3-point range. The 49ers did out-rebound the Aztecs, 45-37.
