49ers Just Miss Playoffs with 1-0 Loss RIVERSIDE, CA-- Vanessa Chanez scored in the third minute of play with a header to propel UC Riverside (11-6-3, 5-3-1 Big West) into the Big West Tournament, defeating visiting Long Beach State (9-9-0, 5-4-0 Big West) 1-0 on Sunday afternoon. With the loss, coupled with UC Santa Barbara's 4-1 win over Utah State, LBSU was eliminated from next week's conference tournament, instead finishing with a record-tying nine wins, its first .500 season and a school-record for conference victories (5). The 49ers ended its season winning nine of its final 14 matches after an 0-4-0 start. Ashlee Stephens sent in a cross from the right side for Chanez who headed it past Meghan Hartwyk (Los Alamitos) at 2:54, giving UCR a 1-0 lead. Hartwyk would leave the game in the 18th minute and not return after getting kicked in the jaw by Chanez. Her replacement, Tara Gotthardt (Pleasanton) would make six saves the rest of the afternoon. The 49ers would have its opportunities, taking four shots on goal in the first 45 minutes of play, two by Nicole Cross but never finding the back of the net. Amber Oliveira (Lemoore), who scored the game-winner on Friday, had a chance to tie in the 59th minute but her shot hit off the cross bar. Abie Curry (Chico) finished her career with 16 career goals, and 36 career points, both tops in 49er history, while her 60 matches played is eighth. Lauren Doffing (San Diego) finished her carer with 61 matches played, seventh-best all-time. Allison Wiegand (Modesto) will return next season second all-time in goals scored (14) and career points (34). LBSU finished in a tie for fourth place with UC Irvine, after CS Fullerton defeated UCI 3-1 on Sunday. UCI won the tiebreaker with the win over LBSU on Tuesday. Cal Poly will be the #1 seed, followed by UC Santa Barbara, UCR and UCI. UCSB knocked out Utah State with a 4-1 win today.
