Cal Poly Scores Two Quick Goals to Win LONG BEACH, CA-- Cal Poly's Kelsey Carroll came off the bench and scored twice midway through the second half to give the defending Big West Champions (11-1-0, 2-0-0 Big West) a 2-0 victory over host Long Beach State (5-6-0, 1-1-0 Big West). Despite the loss, LBSU split its opening weekend, defeating pre-season favorite, UC Santa Barbara on Friday. The 49ers have dropped just two decisions over its last seven, both by shutout, and both to teams which had been ranked this season (LBSU lost to No. 7-ranked UConn on September 21 while Cal Poly dropped out of the top-25 after being ranked No. 21). Carroll took full of advantage of a gusty wind, scoring twice over a span of three minutes. At 65:39, goalkeeper Greta Shirdon's boot took off down the field, bounced and ended up in front of Carroll who scored from just inside the penalty box. Then at 67:47, the 49ers, kicking into the wind, failed to clear it, Carroll stole it and scored from 18 yards out to give Cal Poly a 2-0 lead. The Beach had a chance to break a scoreless tie around the 57th minute, as sophomore Allison Reeves twice fired shots which were saved by Shirdon. The 49ers took 10 second half shots and 14 for the contest, while Cal Poly took 10 shots in each half and 20 for the contest. The 49er defense stifled a Cal Poly attack in the 11th minute of the game as shots by Becky Clark and Heidi McQuitty both were cleared out by the Shanna Wender, Lauren Doffing and the rest of the 49er backline. LBSU takes to the road for its next two matches, at Pacific on Friday and at CS Northridge on Sunday. |
