Oliveira Sends Beach Home With Win FULLERTON, CA-- Amber Oliveira (Lemoore) side-swiped the game-winner in the 74th minute, putting Long Beach State (9-8-0, 5-3-0 Big West) into a second place tie in the Big West standings with one match to go, as the 49ers held on for a 2-1 win over host CS Fullerton (8-8-2, 2-5-1 Big West). With five wins in conference, LBSU set a new school-record for Big West wins. Kristin Travis' (Davis) half volley over the Fullerton defense put the ball in front of Oliveira eight yards out at 73:48 to give the 49ers its second-straight victory over the Titans. LBSU beat CSF last year 2-1. Abie Curry (Chico) put The Beach up 1-0 at 5:52 as a turnover by Marlene Sandoval put the ball in the all-time leading scorer's feet for a 10-yard score from the middle of the penalty box. It was Curry's 16th career score and fifth of the season. CSF quickly tied the match at 28:04, as Sandoval sent in a cross which squirted out of Tara Gotthardt's (Pleasanton) hands and right in front of Lauryn Welch, who scored her first goal of the season. Gotthardt finished with a career-best seven saves. The 49er offense took 14 shots on the night of which eight were on or in the goal. The Big West continued to remain muddled, as UC Irvine defeated UC Riverside 1-0 in overtime while Cal Poly defeated Utah State 2-0. The current top-five in the Big West are as follows: Cal Poly (6-0-2, 20 points), who clinched the regular season, LBSU and UC Irvine (4-1-3, 15) in second, followed by Utah State (4-1-2, 14) and UC Riverside (4-3-1, 13). The UCSB (3-2-2, 11)-Idaho match starting at 7 p.m. was unavailable. The Beach play its final regular season match on Sunday at 1 p.m. at UC Riverside. |
