LBSU-UCI Match Postponed IRVINE, CA-- Due the three separate fires in the Inland Empire and San Diego County, the Long Beach State's women's soccer match at UC Irvine was postponed Sunday by Big West Commissioner Dennis Farrell over health and safety concerns. The match is re-scheduled to be played on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Irvine after both school's athletics directors discussed the situation with the commissioner. The 49ers had warmed up for a half hour before game time, while UCI remained in the the locker room until about 10 minutes prior to the match being called. The biggest of the three fires, the Grand Prix Fire, which has burned over 27,000 acres and another one, the Old Waterman Canyon Fire, which has burned 10,000 acres are both located in the Inland Empire near San Bernardino and Rancho Cucamonga, 55 miles Northeast of Irvine. Another smaller fire, which has burned over 4,500 acres, is located 40 miles South near Camp Pendelton in San Diego. The 49ers, at 8-7-0 and 4-2-0 in the Big West, are currently battling for a berth in the Big West Conference Tournament. LBSU entered Sunday as one of four team with four wins in the Big West. The 49ers will now have three matches next week, at UCI on Tuesday, at CS Fullerton on Friday and UC Riverside on Sunday. |
