| BEACH WIN CONFERENCE OPENER Johnson Leads with 20 Points, as New Season Begins 1-0 IRVINE, CA-- Using a 19-4 run midway through the second half, Long Beach State women's basketball (4-8, 1-0 BWC) won their conference opener, 64-50, over host UC Irvine (7-5, 0-1 BWC) on Sunday afternoon. Glory Johnson led the 49ers with 20 points and eight rebounds on 8-of-13 shooting, while Jinga Gosschalk added 11 points and seven rebounds. Lauren Yadon led all scorers with 21 points, while Kristen Green added 12 points for UCI. The Beach shot 45% in the second half, compared to a 26% clip by the Anteaters. On the game, LBSU hit 42% of their shots, while Irvine shot 31%. The 49ers outrebounded UCI, 47-to-28. Johnson's fastbreak layup gave LBSU a 58-43 lead with 5:07 remaning, as The Beach went on a 19-4 run. A driving layup by Deja Blevins, put the lead into double digits, for the first time, at 51-41 with 7:40 left. The 49ers would take a 30-29 lead at the half, as Johnson's layup at the buzzer, retook the lead. LBSU shot 40%, while the Anteaters hit 36%. Yadon scored 15 first half points, compared to 12 points by Johnson. The Beach went up 20-12 on a Lauren Bull three-pointer with just under 10 minutes left, before UCI went on a 13-4 run to take a 25-22 lead with 5:21 remaining on two free throws by Lauren Green. Back-to-back buckets by Yadon, a three, followed by a layup gave UCI their first lead, at 22-21, with 6:20 left. The Beach return to action on Thursday when they host UC Riverside. BOX SCORE |
