BEACH HOST UC RIVERSIDE THIS WEEK The 49ers (4-8, 1-0 BWC) will host conference rival UC Riverside (3-9, 0-1 BWC) in their only game of the week on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in The Pyramid. The Beach, fresh off a 64-50 victory at UC Irvine, look to remain undefeated in conference play. LBSU will play just twice over the next two weeks, hosting UCR, before traveling to Idaho next Wednesday. Senior F Glory Johnson continues to lead the Big West with 16.1 points per game, and is third in rebounding with 9.1 boards per game. Johnson also ranks in the top-five in field goal shooting (48%), free throw percentage (80%) and blocks (1.5).
RUNNING THE SHOW Dallas Bolla enters her eighth season as the head coach of LBSU basketball. The Beach have gone 110-105 in her seven-plus years, winning at least 16 games in each of the last four. The 49ers have won 10 Big West games in five of Bolla's seven seasons. UC RIVERSIDE (3-9, 0-1) | JANUARY 9 NOTES: Jennifer Young's club have lost three straight, after winning three straight... had begun season 0-5... team lost at LMU (77-53), in only common opponent game.. wins are against Sacramento State, Pt. Loma and Portland State... four players average double figures, led by Casandra Reeves 13.6 ppg, but the team is hitting just 35%... the team's split their two meetings last year, each winning at home. SLOW START, BIG FINISHES Its not how you start, but how you finish. JANUARY 2 | LBSU 64, UCI 50 LBSU 30-34--64 (Johnson 20 pts, Team: 42%) UCI 29-21--50 (Yadon 21 pts, Team: 31%) Using a 19-4 run midway through the second half, The Beach opened up conference play with a victory. LBSU scored at will in the paint, downing 34 points, while taking advantage of nearly every opportunity, scoring 17 second chance points. The 49ers outrebounded UCI 47-to-28, grabbing 16 offensive rebounds. The bench chipped in 24 points, as Jinga Gosschalk scored 11 point and had seven rebounds. LBSU's lead hit double digits with 7:40 left, as the 49ers never looked back.
JANUARY 2 | USF 67, LBSU 47 USF 27-40--67 (Sauer 15 pts, Team: 43%) LBSU 15-32--47 (Johnson 17 pts, Team: 29%) The Beach were held without a field goal for nearly 15 minutes in the second half, as USF built a 25-6 lead, scoring 23 unanswered points. LBSU shot just 29% in their final non-conference game, missing 23 of their first 25 shots.
LETS MAKE IT 2-AND-0 This is the fourth time in Dallas Bolla's eight seasons, that the team has opened up conference with a win, and the first time since 2000-01. They have gone 2-0 twice (1999-2000, 2000-01) and started out 3-0, once, in 2000-01.
GLORY-OUS TIMES Senior Glory Johnson (Phoenix, AZ) scored a team-best 20 points and added eight eight rebounds on 8-of-13 shooting in the team's conference opener at Irvine. Johnson has reached double figures in every game this season except for the opener with USD. Johnson leads the Big West in scoring, at 16.1 points per game, and is in the top-five in four other categories.
FINDING THE SEAM Freshman Monica Quan (Walnut, CA) continues to excel at guard, since being inserted in the starting lineup in the first round of the Beach Classic on December 20 (five games ago). Quan scored a career-best 14 vs. Belmont in that game, and dished off a career-high five as well. Quan had four assists versus USF last week and had scored at least four points in five straight starts, before being shutout off the bench at UCI.
RUSHING THE REBOUNDS Redshirt freshman CeCe Rush (Pontiac, MI) has grabbed at least 10 rebounds in two of her last four contests, including 10 at UCI on Sunday. Rush is averaging 5.4 rebounds on the season.
BAKING THE BOARDS Junior Jennifer Baker (Riverdale, MD) has grabbed at least five rebounds in each of her last five games. Over the last five games, Baker is averaging 7.8 rebounds per game, grabbing eight rebounds three times and 10 at LMU in mid-December.
JINGA SCORES SEASON HIGH Jinga Gosschalk (Holland) tied her season-high with 11 points in her last game at UC Irvine and set a season-high in rebounds with seven. The senior had not reached double digits in the previous six games. Gosschalk is averaging 6.3 points and 3.5 rebounds per game in 2002-03.
NO BULL ABOUT IT Lauren Bull (Rockford, IL) is beginning to heat up, scoring eight points versus USF, followed by five points at Irvine. Bull had scored just 14 points over her previous seven games. Bull is averaging 4.0 points and 2.4 rebounds per game this year.
WILSON AMONGST STEALS LEADERS Sophomore Candice Wilson (Sacramento, CA) ranks second in the Big West in steals with 2.8 swipes per contest and third in assists (4.4). On the year, Wilson is second on the team with 9.3 points per game, but in the midst of a bit of a cold front over the last five games, averaging 5.0 points per game. Previously, Wilson averaged 12.3 ppg.
CONNORS LIKELY TO REDSHIRT SEASON Sophomore Jayme Connors, (Las Vegas, NV), who was averaging 11.2 points and 9.0 rebounds per game, will wear a "Cam Boot" on her left ankle for the next three to six weeks, starting in mid-December, to heal tendinitis. The ankle will then be re-evaluated. It was originally diagnosed as a small fracture. A member of the 2002 Big West All-Freshman Team, Connors was coming off a career-best 24 points at Stetson, and had started all six games this season, enough to receive a medical redshirt.
AMONGST THE BIG WEST LBSU is fifth in scoring (60.8) and fifth in defense (67.6)... the team is fourth in rebounding margin (+0.6 rpg)... LBSU is second in rebounding (41.8), and ninth in three-point shooting (25%)... LBSU is sixth in shooting (37%)... Johnson leads the Big West with 16.1 ppg, and is fourth in shooting, fifth in free throw shooting, third in rebounding and fourth in blocks... Wilson is third in asssits and second in steals.
49ERS PICKED TO FINISH THIRD The Beach were picked to finish third in both the Big West Coaches and Media polls. UC Santa Barbara, winners of the last seven conference titles, was picked to win it, again, followed by Pacific and LBSU. The next tier features Idaho, Cal Poly, UC Irvine and UC Riverside, while CS Fullerton and CS Northridge make up the rest.
REACHING THE PRO'S Jackie Moore (1998-2001), the former Big West Conference Player of the Year (2001) was a reserve for the Indiana Fever of the WNBA in 2002. Moore played in 18 games, starting two, scoring 42 points and adding 29 rebounds.
ON THE TUBE The 49ers will be featured twice on television this season. The Sunshine Network broadcast the game from The Pyramid on December 1, while KDOC-LA, as part of the Big West television package, will broadcast the heated UCSB-49er home matchup on February 26.
TRANSFERS WILL REDSHIRT Six-foot-six German National Team member junior Petra Glaeser (UNLV) and sophomore guard Crystal McCutcheon (Pepperdine) will both redshirt after transferring from Division-I institutions, as per NCAA guidelines.
SANTOS COMPLETES RECRUITING CLASS Brazilian National Teamer Fernanda Santos (Sao Paulo, Brazil) has signed a National Letter of Intent for the 2003-04 season. Santos is the second National Teamer to commit to play for The Beach for the 2003-04 season. Santos, a 6-3 guard, will play her sophomore season at Grayson Junior College (TX) after playing at Lee University (TN) as a freshman. |
