BEACH OH SO CLOSE TO VICTORY UW-Milwaukee Survives 49er Attack
WEST LAFAYETTE, IN-- Lightning struck for The Beach. Literally on the second day of the Boilermaker Challenge Cup. The team's match with UW-Milwaukee was delayed 45 minutes due to lightening strikes in the area, but despite the delay, the Panthers (1-2-1) went on to a 3-1 victory over the 49ers (0-4-0). The Beach had the Panthers, the 10th-rated team in the Great Lakes Region, on the ropes for much of the match taking a 1-0 lead in the 38th minute. Freshman Laura Kucich (Diamond Bar) headed a cross from classmate Amy Leipham (Davis, CA) to give the 49ers their first lead of the season. Lauren Doffing (San Diego, CA) was the 49ers lone representative on the all-tournament team, which host Purdue won, after surviving a very physical 1-0 match on Friday. Maggie Suminski was able to tie it at the 55:15 mark as her shot from 30 yards out took a couple of bad hops and found the back of the net. Lightening then struck the West Lafayette area four minutes later, clearing the field for the next 45 minutes. Once play resumed, Janice McGann followed up a shot off the cross bar into the goal at 64:13 to give UWM a 2-1 lead. Suminski again followed at 79:00 with another bouncer from about the same distance to make it 3-1. Despite an 0-4-0 record, the 49ers have been in most of their contests this season. The team has either been tied, ahead, or within on goal in 261 of their 360 minutes this season, just over 73% of the time. The 49ers return home to take on Oregon State at 4 p.m. on Friday.
