Freshman Hurler Named to Baseball America's List September, 2002 DURHAM, NC-- Long Beach State hurler Jered Weaver (Simi Valley) was named a Summer All-American by Baseball America after completing a very successful tour in Alaska. Weaver, who went 8-4 with a 4.37 ERA for the Dirtbags as a freshman, compiled a 1.11 ERA with 73 strikeouts for the Anchorage Bucs. The team, compiled each year by Baseball America, featured players from the most prominent summer teams in the country, most notably, Team USA, the Cape Cod League and Alaska. Weaver was one of two players selected from Alaska. Weaver ranked third in the Alaska League with a 1.11 ERA and second in strikeouts with 73 over a team-best 64.2 innings for the Anchorage Bucs. Weaver went 5-1. Weaver is one of three, eight-game winners, returning for The Beach in the spring. Soon-to-be junior Abe Alvarez (Fontana) was named the Big West's Pitcher of the Year behind a 12-3 mark, while senior Matt Paz (Stockton) compiled over 100 innings with eight wins a piece in 2000 and 2001, before missing last year due to injury. |
