49ERS HEAD TO INDIANA FOR PURDUE TOURNEY WEEKLY RELEASE (PDF) HEADED TO INDIANA The 49ers (0-2-0) will head to the Midwest for a very competitive Purdue Tournament this Friday and Sunday. Two of the four teams (host Purdue (1-1-0) and UW-Milwaukee (0-2-0)), are ranked in the Great Lakes Region. Buffalo (0-0-2) joins The Beach in the four-team tournament. The Boilermakers host LBSU at 2 p.m. PDT on Friday with the winner playing in the championship match on Sunday at 12 p.m. The consolation match will be at 9 a.m. PDT. PURDUE RECORD: 1-1-0 Last Games: def. Saint Marys 1-0, lost at Cal 2-0, Quick Kicks: The Boilermakers will host The Beach in their home opener in West Lafayette, IN... Purdue used an unassisted goal from Annette Kent, early in the first half to upset No. 16-ranked Saint Marys, 1-0, on Friday... they then lost 2-0 to No. 15-ranked Cal on Sunday, holding the Bears scoreless for the first 58 minutes... the Boilermakers return 24 lettermen and 10 starters from a team that went 10-6-3 last year. UW-MILWAUKEE RECORD: 0-2-0 Last Games: lost to Oakland 2-1, lost Ohio 1-0 Quick Kicks: The Panthers are coming off back-to-back one goal losses to Oakland and Ohio... the teams lone goal this season came Evann Franklin against Oakland... goalie Molly Schneider is posting an 0.67 goals against average... the team returns 20 lettermen and eight starters to a team was 16-5 in 2001. BUFFALO RECORD: 0-0-2 Last Games: tied Syracuse 2-2, tied Colgate 1-1 Quick Kicks: The Bulls have played a total of 230 minutes this season and have two ties to show for it... on Sunday against Colgate, they sent the game into overtime in the 65th minute with Erin McGarrys second goal of the season... Buffalo had a 2-1 lead against Syracuse, up until the 80th minute, when Syracuse tied it... the team returns 22 lettermen and 10 starters. SERIES: First Meeting. AT THE HELM Veteran coach Peter Reynaud (CS Hayward 72) is in his second year as the 49ers head coach. Now in his 21st season as a head coach, Reynaud is 232-122-5.
DEFENSIVE STARTS Despite losing their first two matches of the season (2-0 to Navy on Friday and 4-1 at Pepperdine on Sunday) the 49ers had strong defensive efforts to open both matches. Last Friday in the teams opener, LBSU held Navy scoreless for the first 64 minutes, while against nationally-ranked Pepperdine on Sunday, the Waves were held without a shot for the first 15 minutes and without a goal for the first 35 minutes.
CURRY HAS FIRST GOAL Abie Curry (Chico, CA) scored the teams first goal of the season against No. 20-ranked Pepperdine on Sunday. The unassisted goal came in the 85th minute.
SCHEDULING TOUGH This years schedule features two top-20 opponents and six teams ranked regionally in Soccer Buzzs pre-season poll. No. 20-ranked Pepperdine (Sept. 1) and No. 13-ranked Saint Marys (Oct. 10) are fifth and sixth, respectively, in the West Region. CS Fullerton (11th) and San Diego (12th) are also ranked in the West Region. Two teams in the Boilermakers Tournament are ranked in the Great Lakes Region, Purdue (7th) and UW-Milwaukee (10th).
YOUNG AND TALENTED Of the 15 returning lettermen, eight were starters last year. Of the teams eight starters, five have earned all-conference honors in theircareers. Defender Diana Sanguinetti (Stevenson Ranch, CA) was a first team pick, while forward Allison Wiegand (Modesto, CA) was a second team selection in 2001. Abie Curry (Chico, CA), Becky Ricci (San Diego, CA) and Shana Wender (Fresno, CA) have earned honorable mention accolades sometime in their career.
AND YOUR NAME IS? This years team will feature two redshirt freshmen from last years team and 13 newcomers. The 49ers top newcomers include: forwards Allison Reeves (Lakewood, CA), Mackenzie Blechel (Forestville,CA), and Shaina ODonnell (Victorville, CA); defender Lisa Mireles (Los Alamitos, CA),; midfielder Natalie Messina (Santa Rosa, CA), and goalie Meghan Hartwyk (Los Alamitos).
BIG WEST COACHES POLL CS Fullerton was picked to repeat as conference champions with 99 points, followed by UCSB (81 points), Cal Poly (80), UC Irvine (65), Pacific (56), CS Northridge (50), LBSU (49), Idaho (33), Utah State (24) and UC Riverside (13). LBSU went 4-11-2 and 3-5-1 in the Big West for sixth place in 2001. |
