COURTESY OF HAWAII SPORTS INFORMATION HONOLULU - Long Beach State's women's soccer team (1-5-1) broke through with their first win of the season in convincing fashion, posting a shutout over Long Island (2-5-0) to win, 5-0 in the second match of the 2002 OHANA Hotels & Resorts Shootout. For The Beach, it was their largest margin of victory and most goals scored in one game in the team's five-year history. The 49ers put forth a strong, well-rounded effort, receiving goals from five different players. Long Beach State controlled the tempo for much of the evening, out-shooting the Blackbirds, 18-to-7. Shaina O'Donnell and Abie Curry each posted a goal and an assist to spur the 49er attack. Sarah Gamet, Sarah Aguilar also scored, with the match's final goal coming on an own goal by the Long Island defense. O'Donnell registered the first score of the match just 5 minutes and 15 seconds into the action when she sent an apparent cross toward the goal. The ball stayed on a straight course toward the net and deflected off the hands of LIU keeper Holly Nixon into the goal. Lauren Doffing sent the ball to O'Donnell on the right flank to earn the assist. O'Donnell created the next 49er scoring opportunity at 20:57 when she drove down the right flank before sending a rolling cross into the LIU penalty box. Curry ran onto the ball and pushed a one-time shot past Nixon to make it 2-0, Long Beach State. LBSU reserve Sarah Aguilar posted the third score of the game at 37:58 when she collected a miss directed clear attempt by a Long Island defender and struck a right-footed shot toward the goal. The ball short-hopped a sprawling Nixon and bounded into the net. Gamet pushed the score to 4-0 just two minutes and 43 seconds into the second period when she scored off an assist from Curry. Curry drove toward the goal from just past the midfield circle and carried the ball into the LIU penalty box before dishing-off to a trailing Gamet, who put a right-footed first touch shot inside the near post. The 49ers will meet host Hawai`i in the final match of the OHANA Hotels & Resorts on Monday, Sept. 23 at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. Kick-off is set for 5:00 p.m. |
