MEXICAN NATIONAL TEAM For the second straight season, The Beach will host the Mexican National Team in an exhibition. This year's match will be played on Thursday, September 26 at 3 p.m. Please note the date and time change from earlier schedules.
LAST WEEK The Beach continue to be "right there," especially this last weekend in West Lafayette, IN. The 49ers kept two regionally ranked teams, Purdue (5th) and UW-Milwaukee (10th), on the ropes in each of the 49ers two matches at the Boilermaker Challenge Cup. Despite going 0-2, the 49ers held their own with a physical Purdue club on Friday, only to lose 1-0; and against UW-Milwaukee, leading 1-0 ten minutes into the second half. A couple of unlucky bounces and a lightening strike (despite no rain, the match was delayed 45 minutes) led to a 3-1 Panther win.
AT THE HELM Veteran coach Peter Reynaud (CS Hayward '72) is in his second year as the 49ers head coach. Now in his 21st season as a head coach, Reynaud is 232-124-5.
RIGHT IN THE MIX The 49ers 0-4-0 record is deceptive. LBSU has been in each of their four matches this season, holding their own against three regionally ranked opponents. The 49er defensive efforts have kept them tied or within one goal for 261 of the team's 360 minutes, or just over 73% of the time.
FRESHMEN CONNECT Freshman Laura Kucich (Diamond Bar) gave the 49ers their first lead of the season in the 38th minute on September 8 against UW Milwaukee, scoring on cross off a corner kick from fellow frosh Amy Leipham (Davis, CA).
BARRAGAN ENDS CAREER Marissa Barragan (Long Beach/Poly HS) suffered another season ending knee injury on September 6 at Purdue, ending her LBSU career. Barragan, who redshirted last year after hurting the same knee, worked herself back into shape and into the starting lineup for the 2002 campaign. She ended her career with 10 points and eight goals. Her 55 career shots ranks fifth all-time. She started two games in 2002.
DOFFING ALL-TOURNEY Defender Lauren Doffing (San Diego, CA) was named to the all-tournament team at the Boilermaker Challenge Cup in early September. Doffing helped the team's defense hold Purdue without a goal for the first 70 minutes and keep ahead of UW-Milwaukee for the first 64 minutes. Both the Boilermakers and UW-Milwaukee were rated amongst the best teams in the Great Lakes Region.
CURRY HAS FIRST GOAL Abie Curry (Chico, CA) scored the team's first goal of the season against No. 20-ranked Pepperdine on September 1. The unassisted goal came in the 85th minute.
SCHEDULING TOUGH According to pre-season rankings, this year's schedule features two top-20 opponents and six teams ranked regionally in Soccer Buzz's pre-season poll. No. 20-ranked Pepperdine (loss 4-1) and No. 13-ranked Saint Mary's (Oct. 10) were fifth and sixth, respectively, in the West Region. CS Fullerton (11th) and San Diego (12th) were also ranked in the West Region. Two teams in the BoilermakerChallenge Cup were ranked in the Great Lakes Region, Purdue (5th, loss 1-0) and UW-Milwaukee (loss 3-1, 10th). The team also plays in an exhibition against the Mexican National Team on September 26 at 3 p.m.
YOUNG AND TALENTED Of the 15 returning lettermen, eight were starters last year. Of the team's eight starters, five have earned all-conference honors in their careers. Defender Diana Sanguinetti (Stevenson Ranch, CA) was a first team pick, while forward Allison Wiegand (Modesto, CA) was a second team selection in 2001. Abie Curry (Chico, CA), Becky Ricci (San Diego, CA) and Shana Wender (Fresno, CA) have earned honorable mention accolades sometime in their career.
AND YOUR NAME IS? This year's team will feature two redshirt freshmen from last year's team and 13 newcomers. The 49ers top newcomers include: forwards Allison Reeves (Lakewood, CA), Mackenzie Blechel (Forestville, CA), and Shaina O'Donnell (Victorville, CA); midfielder Natalie Messina (Santa Rosa, CA), and goalie Meghan Hartwyk (Los Alamitos).
BIG WEST COACHES POLL CS Fullerton was picked to repeat as conference champions with 99 points, followed by UCSB (81 points), Cal Poly (80), UC Irvine (65), Pacific (56), CS Northridge (50), LBSU (49), Idaho (33), Utah State (24) and UC Riverside (13). LBSU went 4-11-2 and 3-5-1 in the Big West for sixth place in 2001.
