SIX TO BE INDUCTED INTO LBSU ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME
Long Beach, Calif.--Long Beach State announced today (8/1/02) its inductees for the 2002 class of the Long Beach State Athletics Hall of Fame. The six-member class includes: Todd Dillon (Football), Tom Hoff (Mens Volleyball), Linda Lunceford-Sanders (Softball), Mike Montgomery (Special Category), Jo Redmon (Fencing Coach), and Francois Wise (Mens Basketball).
The Hall of Fame, which was established in 1986, will add these six new members to its roster bringing the total to 154. This will be the 17th class to be inducted into the Long Beach State Athletic Hall of Fame. The cost to attend is $75 per person and $750 per table of ten.
The Hall of Fame class of 2002 will be inducted at the 49er Hall of Fame Dinner on Wednesday, October 23 at the Hyatt Regency Long Beach. The 16th Annual Hall of Fame Golf Tournament will be held on Monday, October 7 at the newly designed Old Ranch Country Club in Seal Beach. The awards dinner following the golf tournament will be held at Spaghettinis Italian Grill & Jazz Club. The cost is $250 per golfer and $1,000 per foursome. THE 49ER HALL OF FAME CLASS OF 2002
Todd Dillon--Football Played in 1982 and 1983...ranks 3rd all-time with 5,704 passing yards and 3rd all-time with 5,588 (242.9) yards in total offense...completed 498-883 (.564) passes with 23 touchdowns...his 498 completions ranks 3rd all-time...his 453 yards passing and 429 yards in total offense on 10/16/82 at San Jose State are the 2nd-best single game totals in 49er history...his 35 pass completions on 10/30/82 at Fresno State ranks 2nd...in 1982 he averaged 326.0 yards in total offense per game, a mark which led the nation...his 3,517 passing yards in 1982 is the 2nd-best single season mark and his 19 touchdown passes that year is tied for the 4th-best single season mark...1st team all-conference in 1982 and 2nd team in 1983...led the 49ers to a 6-5 mark in 1982 and an 8-3 ledger in 1983, including wins at Kansas State and Hawaii.
Tom Hoff--Mens Volleyball Played in 1995 and 1996 after transferring from Ohio State...played on the 2000 U.S. Mens Volleyball Olympic Team...1st team All-American in both 1995 and 1996 as selected by the AVCA and Volleyball Magazine...a two-time first team all-conference performer as well...currently ranks #7 on the 49er career kill chart with 1,230 (in just 2 years)...is 11th on the career block chart with 310...tallied 751 kills in 1995, the 3rd-best single season total in 49er history...also had 176 total blocks that year, the 4th-best single season mark...career-high 44 kills vs. UCSB, the 8th-best single game mark for the 49ers...finished with a career hitting percentage of .369, #6 all-time at Long Beach State.
Linda Lunceford-Sanders--Softball A four-year letterwinner for the 49ers (1991-94)...played on three College World Series teams (1991, 1992, 1993)..3rd team All-American in 1992...1st team All-West Region in 1992 and 2nd team in 1993...1st team All-Big West in 1992 and 2nd team in 1993 and 1994...is the 49ers all-time leader in hits with 259 and runs scored with 100...also ranks 3rd in average (.304), 5th in RBI (75), 4th in doubles (28) and 3rd in at bats (852)...her 263 games played ranks #18 all-time in NCAA history...hit .352 in 1994, the third-best single season mark in 49er history...her 74 hits in 1991 ranks #3 all-time on the 49er single season chart.
Mike Montgomery--Special Category Played on the 1966 and 1968 mens basketball teams at Long Beach State as a reserve guard...is currently the head mens basketball coach at Stanford University, entering his 17th season...has a 339-156 (.685) record at Stanford with 10 trips to the NCAA Tournament and 4 NIT bids...in 1998 the Cardinal reached the Final Four and finished the season at 30-5...he has led Stanford to eight straight NCAA Tournament appearances...in 1991 Stanford wonthe NIT Championship...was the head coach at Montana from 1978-1986 (8 years) and compiled a 154-77 (.667) mark with two NIT bids...overall, in 24 years as a collegiate head coach, Montgomery is 493-232 (.680) with 16 post-season appearances...graduated from Millikan High School and earned his BA degree in physical education from Long Beach State in 1968.
Jo Redmon--Fencing Coach Has been the fencing coach at Long Beach State for 32 years, beginning the program in 1964...led the 49ers to 14 first place finishes at the Intercollegiate Fencing Conference of Southern California Championships...since 1979, Redmon never failed to qualify at least one fencer for the NCAA National Championships...coached eight All-Americans, including current Hall of Famer Tarik Yassir, a four-time All-America honoree...in 1986 the 49ers finished 9th at the NCAA Championships and in 1984, 15th overall...served for five years on the National NCAA Mens and Womens Fencing Committee...was Chair in 1981 of the first AIAW National Championship Committee...was the USFCA Coach of the Year in 1993 and in 2000, the USFCA honored Redmon with the Lifetime Commitment to the Sport of Fencing Award. Francois Wise--Mens Basketball Played from 1976-1980, earning four varsity letters...was drafted in the 4th Round of the 1980 NBA Draft by the Washington Bullets...was an All-American in 1980 for the 49ers...a three-time first team all-league selection (1978-80) and was named to the conference All-Tournament Team three times (1978-80)...led the 49ers in rebounding three straight years (8.8 in 1978, 10.3 in 1979, 9.5 in 1980)...ranks #8 on the 49er career scoring chart with 1,305 points and is the LBSU career leader in rebounds with 896 (7.7 rpg)...his 489 field goals made ranks #7 all-time and his 327 free throws made ranks #4...holds three of the top 10 single season rebounding marks, including the #4 mark of 324 boards in 1979-80...his .566 field goal percentage in 1979-80 ranks #6 all-time single season...LBSU won the league championship his freshman year and advanced to the NCAA Tournament, while his senior year, the 49ers were 22-12 and went 1-1 in the NIT...prepped at Balboa HS in San Francisco and was the NorCal Player of the Year as a senior. |
