Beach Win 9-6 on Saturday as Alvarez Wins Ninth May 4, 2002 SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA-- Jeremy Reed went 3-for-4 with four RBIs, Paul McAnulty added a Beach-best four hits and Abe Alvarez picked up his ninth win in giving the No. 26-ranked Dirtbags (28-16, 9-5 Big West) a 9-6 win over host Cal Poly (25-24-1, 10-7 Big West). The Beach scored early and often, going up 9-3 after six innings, giving Alvarez (9-2) more than enough, as the lefty went the first 5.0 innings, giving up three runs on six hits, walking two and striking out six. Brett Larson (1-3) wasn't so lucky, giving up four earned over the first 3.2 innings to take the loss. Reed came through with four of the first six RBIs from the #7 spot in the order, driving an RBI single up the middle to extend his hit streak to 14 games, followed by an RBI triple in the fourth and a two-run double in the fifth. Reed also had two stolen bases on the day. Mike Hofius, who finished the day 1-for-4, contributed the two RBIs with an RBI single in the second and a sacrifice fly in the fourth. Chris Demaria struck out two for his third save in the ninth, after Jeff Baumback struck out two in his 1.0 inning of work in the eighth. McAnulty had doubles in the second and the sixth, the latter driving in two to give LBSU an 8-3 lead. The rubber game of the series occurs on Sunday at 1 p.m. BOX SCORE |
