Beach's Rally Comes Up Short in the Ninth May 12, 2002 NORTHRIDGE, CA-- No. 15-ranked CS Northridge (36-15, 16-5 Big West) salvaged the final game of the three-game series with Long Beach State (30-19, 11-7 Big West). Barely. After CSUN scored seven times in the bottom of the eighth to lead by five, LBSU came up short, scoring three times, off of two homers, only to come up short 10-8. LBSU had led 5-3 heading into the eighth inning. The Beach who took the first two games of the series, split their four games this week, but more importantly took two out of three from the first place Matadors. Kevin Randel's three-run , two-out, homer in the second gave The Beach a 3-0 lead, before a sacrifice fly by Chris Wright gave LBSU a 4-0 lead. Northridge chipped away before sending 10 men to the plate in the eighth to take a 10-7 lead. Jeremy Reed led off the ninth with a solo homer, off of eventual winner Andy Davidson (10-2) before Davidson gave up a hit to Paul McAnulty before Nick Covarrubias hit a two-run homer. The Beach then proceeded to put runners on second and third with one out only to see Cameron Loe, Saturday's loser, pick up his first save of the season with the final two outs. Josh Alliston started, and pitched the first 3.0 pre-determined innings, giving up one hit while striking out five in his first career start. Chris Demaria (1-2) could not get an out in the eighth, after LBSU led 5-3, giving up five runs on four hits.
