Irvine Empties Bullpen in Win Over Conference Rival April 26, 2002 LONG BEACH, CA- UC Irvine Coach John Salvage may have emptied his bullpen for Friday's 5-4 win over No. 15-ranked Long Beach State (26-13, 8-2 BWC), but his Anteaters (26-18, 7-3 BWC) were able to hold on after two starters entered the game in the late innings. Sunday's scheduled starter, Glenn Swanson, pitched the final two outs for his second save, while Paul French, who has registered 11 starts on the season, pitched the inning prior, giving up one run on two hits. The Beach had closed to 5-4 in the ninth after Swanson balked a run in, but were unable to get Kevin Randel home with one out, as the next two Dirtbags struck out against Swanson. The Anteaters would take a five-run lead after batting in the top of the fifth. An RBI single by Brett Dalton made it 1-0, before Jordan Szabo followed two batters with an RBI single to double the score. Matt Anderson followed with a two-run triple to give UCI a 4-0 lead, all off of starter Abe Alvarez (8-2) who pitched the first 4.0 innings. The Anteaters added one in the fifth off another RBI single from Dalton to lead 5-0. Sean Tracey (7-4) pitched a strong 6.0 innings, giving up two runs on five hits, walking two while striking out four. Since losing at Fullerton on March 24, following a six-run, 3.0 inning performance, Alvarez has compiled a 5.11 ERA over his last five starts. Alvarez started the season 6-0 with a 1.24 ERA. LBSU scored twice in the fifth to close to within 5-2 off a two-run single from Kevin Randel.
