49ers Get Back to Winning Ways with 16 Hit Attack April 21, 2002 CORAL GABLES, FL-- A team meeting seemed to do the trick. After losing twice to defending National Champion and unranked, Miami, the 49er hitters had a meeting with the coaching staff late Saturday night, resulting in a 16-hit attack in which No. 13-ranked Long Beach State (25-12) crushed host Miami (20-19) 10-1 on Sunday afternoon. Paul McAnulty, Nick Covarrubias and Jeremy Reed each contributed three hits a piece, which was more than enough for senior RHP Nate Beucler (2-1), who went 6.0 innings, and gave up one run on four hits. The reigning Big West Pitcher of the Week, struck out six and walked three in winning his second straight walk. Chris Demaria picked up his second save of the season, pitching the final three innings, striking out four. Covarrubias drove in four runs on the day, on a groundout in the first, to give LBSU a 1-0 lead, an RBI double in the third to make it 2-0 and a two-run double in the fourth to make it 7-0. McAnulty contributed an RBI double in the third and another RBI single in the eighth. On the day, LBSU contributed six doubles. The Beach scored seven runs off of starter Vince Bongiovanni (0-4), tagging the righty for five runs (three earned) on six hits over the first 2.0 innings. The Beach played without the services of two starting infielders, second baseman Nick Orlandos who missed Sunday's game with a hip flexor, and third baseman/catcher Todd Jennings who has missed the past two weeks with a strained MCL. Both are expected to play next weekend against Irvine. The Beach host San Diego on Wednesday at 6:05 p.m. at Blair Field, before UC Irvine comes to Blair next weekend for a three-game series.
