Junior Goes 3-for-3 With Game Winning Blast April 2, 2002 LONG BEACH, CA- Junior first baseman Paul McAnulty led off the ninth inning with a game-winning homer, as the No. 14-ranked Dirtbags (19-9) defeated visiting UCLA (13-17) 4-3 on Tuesday evening. McAnulty finished the day, 3-for-3 with three RBIs, as The Beach have now won 12 of their last 15. Carlos Muniz (1-0) picked up the win, striking out four in 1.2 innings of work, while Bill Susdorf (0-2), the seventh Bruin pitcher, took the loss, pitching the final 1.0 inning. McAnulty is now 8 for his last 15, driving in nine of his 18 RBIs over the past four contests. UCLA went up early, scoring two times in the first to lead 2-0 off of starter Nate Beucler. Ben Francisco's sacrifice fly made it 1-0, as Wes Whisler followed with an RBI double. The Beach came back with single runs in the second and fourth innings to tie it at 2-2. Kevin Randel's sacrifice fly in the third cut the lead in half, while Paul McAnulty's RBI double in the fourth tied the game. The Bruins took a 3-2 lead in the fifth off an RBI single from Josh Arhart. Neither starter lasted past the fourth inning, with LBSU's starter Nate Beucler giving up three runs on seven hits over 4.1 innings, while UCLA lefty Mike Kunes pitched just 3.0 innings, giving up two runs on three hits. Reliever Mike Castillo - the fourth UCLA pitcher of the night - faced just one batter, Paul McAnulty, who laced a single into right field to tie the game at 3-3 in the sixth. Chris Demaria kept the Bruins scoreless for 3.0 innings, scattering just three hits in keeping the game tied. Chris Wright showed off his defense, throwing out a runner at second off a single to left in the third before making a sliding catch down the leftfield line in the fifth. In the third inning, the crowd gave new Men's Basketball Coach Larry Reynolds a rousing ovation.
