Beach Had Come Back From 5-1 and 6-5, Lose April 13, 2002 LONG BEACH, CA- UC Santa Barbara (16-20, 3-5 BWC) scored six unearned runs in the top of the 10th, snapping the Dirtbags (22-10, 7-1 BWC) seven-game win streak while giving The Beach their first conference loss of the season. UCSB's 13-6 win came after LBSU came back to twice tie the game, down 5-1 and 6-5 in the eighth and ninth innings, respectively. The game lasted 4:10. In the 10th, Josh Alliston walked the first two batters before giving up the go-ahead RBI single to R.J. Smith to give UCSB a 7-6 lead. Three errors and seven runs later, UCSB led 13-6 lead. Six of those runs were unearned. Eric Posthumus (3-1) picked up the win in relief, while Josh Alliston (2-3) took the loss. With LBSU down, 5-1, the Dirtbags swung back into things, scoring four times in the eighth to tie it at 5-5, before tying in again in the bottom of the ninth, at 6-6, to send it into extra innings thanks to two key hits from Nick Covarrubias. Gaucho sidearming lefty Sean Thompson mastered The Beach until two outs in the eighth inning, allowing one run on eight hits over the first 7.2 innings. At that point, UCSB led 5-1. With two outs, The Beach sent seven men to the plate as the first six came through with hits to tie the game at 5-5. Covarrubias started it off with a single, followed by a single by Paul McAnulty before an RBI double from Paul Macaluso gave The Beach their first run. Brad Davis than came through with a two-run single to cut the lead to 5-4, chasing Thompson from the game. Kevin Miller came in to face Chris Wright and gave up a single followed by a game-tying single from Tim Hutting-the sixth hit of the inning-- to tie the game at 5-5. Posthumus, the third pitcher of the inning, got Nick Orlandos to ground out to end the inning The Gauchos would again take the lead, at 6-5, in the top of the ninth, off a sacrifice fly from Josh McCanne. Covarrubias did it again in the bottom of the inning, with Jeremy Reed on third thanks to a walk, steal and wild pitch, he drove a ball through a drawn in infield on the left side to tie the game at 6-6, sending the game into extra innings. UCSB chased Daniel Eisentrager from the game in the sixth, after 5.2 innings, as Santa Barbara ended up scoring five runs on 11 hits off the right hander to lead 5-1. Reliever Jeff Baumback pitched well before tiring in the ninth, allowing one run on two hits in 2.2 innings. Baumback struck out three on the night before leaving with the score tied with one out with runners on the corners in the ninth. The Gauchos, for the second straight night, went up 2-0 in the first inning, as two straight bloop hits led to two runs. UCSB added a run in the second on an RBI single from Blair Havens to lead 3-0. LBSU, though hitting line drives for most of the night, scored just one run through five innings, cutting the UCSB lead to 3-1 in the fifth off a sacrifice fly from Tim Hutting.
