McAnulty and Randel Homer, Beach Win Seventh in a Row April 12, 2002 LONG BEACH, CA- Paul McAnulty and Kevin Randel each went deep in leading the No. 14-ranked Dirtbags (22-9, 7-0 BWC) to a 8-5 victory over conference rival UC Santa Barbara (15-20, 2-5 BWC) on Friday evening. The win was Long Beach State's seventh in a row and 15th of their last 18th. The nine inning affair lasted a mere 3:40. Both homers, McAnulty's three-run homer in the fourth and Randel's two-run homer in the fifth, were each slugger's team-best fourth of the season. Abe Alvarez (8-1) pitched yet another gem, going 6.2 innings, walking one while striking out nine. Alvarez gave up three unearned runs off of four LBSU miscues in his first start after a 12-day layoff. Alvarez allowed just five hits. UCSB took a 2-0 lead after just a half inning of play, scoring two unearned runs off a throwing error on a botched rundown after a strikeout of Matt Wilkerson. The Beach cut the lead in the half, at 2-1 in the third, off of an RBI groundout by Jeremy Reed. LBSU then went ahead 4-2 in the fourth, thanks to a three-run homer off the bat of McAnulty, before an RBI groundout by Chris Wright made it 5-2. Kevin Randel's two-run homer an inning later gave LBSU a 7-2 lead. UCSB starter Matt Vasquez (4-5), who came in with a 3.02 ERA, gave up seven earned runs on six hits over 4.1 innings. The Gauchos added another unearned run off a leadoff error to cut the lead to 7-3 in the sixth. LBSU reliever Neil Jamison worked out of a bases loaded, no out situation in the eighth, with a fly out to center followed by two strikeouts to keep LBSU up 7-3. Jamison pitched the final 2.0 innings for his second save. A two-run homer by Ryan Spilborghs closed the deficit to 8-5 in the ninth, after LBSU added a single run in the bottom of the eighth to lead 8-3. These two teams play twice more this weekend.
