Eight First Place Finishes For Beach Four Lifetime Bests Set at Aztec Invite March 23, 2002 SAN DIEGO, CA-- The Beach won eight events Saturday at the Aztec Invitational, hosted by San Diego State, as four athletes set lifetime bests. This was the second straight strong showing for the track and field program, who last weekend won both the men's and women's team events at the Long Beach Classic. "Last week it was an entire team effort and we proved to ourselves and to others that we were a good team, with good depth," said head coach Andy Sythe. "This weekend we proved that last week was no fluke and that we can performa at high profile meets, like San Diego State this week and hopefully at Stanford next weekend. The Beach continued their dominace in the throwing events as Stephanie Sampson was the top collegian in two events, while Jon O'Neil finished in the top-three in three others. Sampson picked up her first collegiate win in the discus, tossing a distance of 146'7", and finished second in the hammer with a toss of 176'10". O'Neil won the shot with a toss of 60'6.5" and finished second in the discus and third in the hammer. Serena Boykin also won the individual shot put title with a toss of 45'4". LBSU was also strong in jumping events. Ami Goldhammer set a lifetime best with a toss of 140'4" in the javelin, while Connie Jerz broke her own school-record with a pole vault of 13'4.25". Gladys Iwuaba won the triple jump as leader of the 49er team which finished 1-2-3 in that event. All three won their respective contests. Jimmy Camilo's 16'10.75" mark in the pole vault, was third, but is the top distance by any Big West athlete this season. In the 200m dash, Rashaad Johnson set a lifetime-best with a time of 21.92, while the men's mile relay team also raced to victories in track events. FULL RESULTS |
