Beach Pick Up Seventh in a Row March 19, 2002 LONG BEACH, CA-The No. 17-ranked Long Beach State 49ers (14-6) upped their winning streak to seven in a row, defeating No. 6-ranked Wichita State (10-3) 3-1 at Blair Field on Tuesday night. LHP Abe Alvarez (6-0) picked up his sixth straight win to begin the season, while Todd Jennings went 2-for-4 with a run. LBSU went up 3-0 after four innings, scoring once in the first and twice in the fourth inning. Jeremy Reed scored on a wild pitch in the first to give The Beach a 1-0 lead. RBI singles by Paul McAnulty and Nick Orlandos put two on the board in the fourth. Wichita scored their first run in the seventh inning to cut the lead to 3-1. Abe Alvarez (6-0) pitched the first 5.0 shutout innings, giving up two hits and two walks, while striking out six. Reuben Kerbs (1-1) was chased from the game in the fourth, going 3.1 innings, giving up three runs on eight hits, while striking out four. The Dirtbag bullpen, of Neil Jamison, Carlos Muniz and Josh Alliston, allowed one unearned run and two hits over the final 4.0 innings. Josh Alliston closed the game in the ninth with his third save. The final game of the series is Wednesday at 6:05 p.m., before The Beach head to Fullerton for a three-game series with the Titans starting on Friday. BOX SCORE |
