Freshman Pitches 6.2 No-Hit Innings in First Win of Season March 10, 2002 LONG BEACH, CA- Jered Weaver pitched 6.2 no-hit innings, striking out a career-best eight in leading the No. 30-ranked Long Beach State baseball team (10-6) to a series sweep of No. 27-ranked Arizona (17-7), winning the finale 6-0. The Beach have now won six in a row over Arizona over the past two seasons. Weaver (1-2) pitched seven strong innings, while walking none, in picking up his first win for his career. Catcher Ken Riley broke up Weaver's no-hitter with two outs in the seventh with a single to centerfield. Weaver had retired 20 of the first 21 batters, allowing just two base runners to reach base, an error of the bat of Jeff VanHouten in the fourth and a hit by pitch, which turned into a double play in the sixth. The staff today, Weaver, Pace and Muniz, pitched to three over the minimum, striking out 11 Wildcats, while giving up three hits. For the series, LBSU pitchers struck out 34 Arizona batters, walking just two (both on Saturday), tying a school-record on Friday with 17 punchouts. The staff also pitched two shutouts. Marc Kaiser (3-1, 2.45) took the loss, giving up six runs (three earned) on eight hits over 5.0 innings. Nick Covarrubias, Kevin Randel and Chris Wright each had two hits a piece for The Beach. The Dirtbags scored single runs in the first three innings before exploding for three runs in the fourth to lead 6-0. Reed started it off with an RBI single in the first, Mike Hofius had a sacrifice fly in the second and Chris Wright followed with an RBI groundout in the third. In the fourth, after a passed ball scored the fourth run, Kevin Randel followed with a two-run single to make it 6-0. The Beach will travel to UC Riverside for a three-game series starting on Thursday.
