Beach Takes Series; Host Fresno State on Tuesday February 24, 2002 LONG BEACH, CA- Fresno State (6-8) pounded out 12 hits and defeated the host No. 21-ranked 49ers (6-4) 10-1 on Tuesday night at Blair Field. Casey McGehee went 3-for-5 with two runs and three RBIs while Brandon Esparaza added three RBIs. Fresno led 10-1 after five innings, scoring twice in the first, third and fourth innings, and four runs in the fifth. McGehee had an RBI single in the first and a two-run single in the third. Brandon Esparza added a bases loaded triple to give the Bulldogs a 9-1 lead in the fifth. Nate Beucler (0-1) pitched the first 2.0 innings, giving up two runs before being relieved by Josh Alliston. Alliston gave up a career-worst, eight runs, six earned, on nine hits over the next 2.2 innings. Fresno starter Zach Minor (2-1) meanwhile, gave up one run on seven hits over the first 5.0 innings. Sean Ruthven pitched the final 4.0 innings for the save. The Long Beach State bullpen retired the final 13 batters in a row. LBSU reliever Jeff Baumback pitched 2.1 scoreless innings, while striking out three, while Joey Pace pitched a perfect ninth and Brian Anderson retired the side in the ninth with two strikeouts.
