White Ends Game in Ninth with Base Hit February 17, 2002 BERKELEY, CA-- Carson White's single to rightfield ended the game and completed a comeback for the Golden Bears, as California (5-6) defeated No. 21 Long Beach State (4-2) 4-3 in the finale of the three-games series. The Beach won the series, after winning the first two games. The Beach took a 3-0 lead after their half of the fourth inning, only to see Cal come back and tie it with two runs in the fourth and one in the seventh before White's base hit in Cal's final at-bat ended the comeback.Joe Ingram (2-2) picked up the win, while Chris Demaria (0-1) took the loss. The 49ers went up 1-0 in the top of the first thanks to an RBI off the bat of Nick Covarrubias. Both teams played through a cold steady downpour from the bottom of the first until a rain delay with two outs in the bottom of the second, a period of 40 minutes. The game resumed after a 45 minute rain delay. The Beach added two runs in the fourth to lead 3-0. Mike Hofius had an RBI double down the line to score Covarrubias, while Brad Davis had an RBI groundout. The Bears first hit of the afternoon was a home run, as Jeff Dragicevich's two-run homer in the fourth cut into the 49er lead, 3-2. LBSU starter Jered Weaver was able to work out of a two-on, no-out situation in the fifth with a called strike three of Conor Jackson and a double play ball off the bat of Brian Horwitz to preserve the one-run advantage. Weaver went the first 5.0 innings, giving up two runs on four hits, leaving with a 3-2 lead. Conor Jackson tied the game at 3-3 with two outs in the seventh. With two outs, David Weiner singled followed by a Carson White walk off of reliever Neil Jamison. Jackson followed with a single up the middle off of new LBSU hurler Carlos Muniz to score Weiner and tie the game. Two errors in the ninth led to the final run as an overthrow by SS Kevin Randel allowed White to get to second, while 3B Adam Heether dropped a bunt attempt. The 49ers return home next weekend when they host Arkansas for a three-game series starting on Friday at 6:05 p.m. BOX SCORE |
