Beach Score Four Times in Eighth to Pick Up Win February 15, 2002 BERKELEY, CA-- The No. 21-ranked 49ers (3-1) scored four times in the top of the eighth inning to defeat California (4-5) 8-1 at Evans Diamond on Friday afternoon. The game was the first of a three-game series for the two clubs. The 49ers sent nine men to the plate in the top of the eighth to take a 5-1 lead. The Beach added two runs in the ninth to lead 7-1. Nick Covarrubias' bases loaded single broke a 1-1 tie, as Mike Hofius followed with an RBI ground out to make it 3-1. Josh Alliston (1-0) picked up his first win the of the season, pitching the final 4.0 innings, giving up three hits. Jeremy Reed reach base safely in four out of five plate appearances, including two hits. In the eighth, Todd Jennings broke the game open with a two-out, two-run single to the right side, to give LBSU a 5-1 lead. Hutchinson had walked Paul McAnulty to load the bases after intentionally walking Chris Wright. Jeremy Reed led off the inning with a single. Trevor Hutchinson (2-1) pitched 8.0 innings, tiring in his final inning. The pre-season third team All-American had allowed just two hits and one run over the first seven innings. Hutchinston struck out nine while walking four for the game. Abe Alvarez pitched 5.0 innings, giving up one run on five hits. David Nicholson's solo homer in the bottom of the third broke a string of nine consecutive scoreless innings by LBSU lefthander to start the season and gave Cal a 1-0 lead. Jeremy Reed broke up Hutchinson's no-hitter to lead off the sixth inning with a double to left center. Reed would later tie it at 1-1 on Hutchinson's two-base throwing error off a sacrifice bunt from Nick Orlandos. Hutchinson though was able to work out of a jam with two on and no out, by striking out two of the next three. The Beach played without 3B Edgar Varela who will miss the entire Cal series after hurting his right hand in the final game of the USC series.
