Alvarez Named BWC Pitcher of the Week

Lefthander to Start Friday at California

IRVINE, CA-- Long Beach State LHP Abe Alvarez (Fontana) was named the Big West Conference's Big West Player of the Week after a stellar performance against No. 3-ranked USC last Friday. The sophomore, making his first collegiate start, allowed just two hits over 7.0 innings on the 49ers way to a three-hit shutout of the Trojans.

Alvarez pitched just 3.0 innings in 2001. Alvarez is slated to pitched Friday's matchup with pre-season third team All-American RHP Trevor Hutchinson on Friday at 2 p.m. at Cal.
