LONG BEACH FALLS TO PEPPERDINE 65-63 LBSU's Tony Darden Ties School Record With Eight Three-Pointers December 2, 2002
LONG BEACH, CA – Long Beach State (1-2) fought hard in a back and forth battle, but Pepperdine (1-2) proved to be too much as The Waves beat the 49ers 65-63 at The Pyramid Monday night. Senior Tony Darden tied the single-game record and hit a career high with eight three-pointers in the loss. The 49ers travel to Southern Utah University for a game Wednesday night at 6:00pm PST.
Long Beach had a chance to tie the game with seconds remaining, but Lemi Williams' shot missed the basket as time ran out. Long Beach outrebounded Pepperdine 34-26 and shot 52% for the game, while Pepperdine shot 44%. LBSU committed 23 turnovers, while Pepperdine committed just 10.
Darden led the 49ers with 24 points, all coming off of three-pointers. Vance Lawhorn led The Beach with ten rebounds and added nine points and one assist. Terrance Johnson paced Pepperdine with 18 points, while Jimmy Miggins chipped in with 11 points, five assists, and seven rebounds. Boomer Brazzle added two boards and 13 points for The Waves.
After trailing 61-54 with 4:29 left to play, Miggins sparked the Pepperdine comeback with a three-pointer to make it 61-57 with 4:20 left. Miggins' lay-up with 3:03 left tied the game at 61-61. The Waves finally took the lead, 63-61, after another lay-up by Miggins with 2:17 left.
The 49ers, with two starters in foul trouble, battled back to tie the game, 48-48, after a 10-4 run on a three-pointer by Tony Darden. Pepperdine went on a 6-0 run to lead 54-48 with 8:55 left, but Long Beach charged into the lead, 57-54, off back-to-back of three-pointers by Darden. LBSU continued to build their lead on a 13-0 run, 61-54, on a put back by Vance Lawhorn with 4:29 left to play.
Kevin Roberts left the game with four fouls with 17:36 remaining as Pepeprdine opened the half on a 10-0 run, 43-36. Cody Pearson left the game a minute later with four fouls, Pepperdine leading 44-38.
LBSU took a three-point lead, 36-33, into the locker room at the half after Darden's three-pointer with 28 seconds left. The Beach out-rebounded the Waves 18-13 in the first half and shot 57%, while Pepperdine shot 41%.
Long Beach State opened up the first half on a 21-7 run capped off by a three-pointer by Darden with 12:00 remaining. The 49ers extended their lead to 29-16 after a slam dunk by Lawhorn with 6:22 left, giving LBSU their largest lead of the half. Pepperdine went on a 14-6 run with 50 seconds left in the half to tie the game at 33-33 after a lay up by Boomer Brazzle.
