Niners, Northridge Knotted at Nil Teams Tie in Regular Season Finale
LONG BEACH, CA-- Long Beach State (6-9-5, 4-2-3 BWC) and CS Northridge (3-13-2, 2-5-2 BWC) both ended their seasons in a tie, at 0-0, after two overtimes. The Beach outshot the Matadors, with a single-game record, 27 shots as Northridge's defense, playing short, stopped 12 shots on goal, while the 49ers defense limited the Matadors to just 10 shots.
The 49ers own goalkeeper, Hannah Cochrun, playing in her final match, with the shutout, set the single-season record for goals against average with 0.95. Cochrun also ended her career with a 49er-record 1.25 GAA. The five ties by LBSU is also a record.
"It was a great season for us, we came together at the end and are very happy about the season," said Head Coach Peter Reyanud, whose team tied the single-season record for conference victories (4) and went 6-5-5 over the final 16 games, including a victory over then-No. 25-ranked CS Fullerton. "We were a little unlucky today, but we were competitive with the top teams and I think we've got things turned around."
LBSU's Diana Sangunetti missed a penalty kick with 2:23 left in the second overtime, and was unable to set up another opportunity with a direct kick to the right of the box with 1:30 left. Sarah Gamet, one of four LBSU players playing in the final match, fired a shot with 17 seconds left, which Jasper caught for the final play of the match. Shaina O'Donnell, who had two assists on Friday, had six shots, including three on goal.
In a physical contest, the Matadors lost two players due to red cards--their first, goalie, Comstock, after the 30th minute, and Jenny Vargas after the 73rd minute. As play went on, CSUN settled into playing for a tie.
It was the final regular season game for LBSU's Cochrun, Gamet, Sarah Aguilar, and Becky Ricci, who played in a school-record 71st game.
