The next tier features Idaho, Cal Poly, UC Irvine and UC Riverside, while CS Fullerton and CS Northridge make up the rest.
GLASER HEADED TO GERMANY Six-foot six redshirt center Petra Glaser (Amisberg, Germany), a member of a couple of different A2 German National teams, left Tuesday, November 12, to try to make the German National team and help them through qualifying tournaments for future Olympic competition. Out of 16 players invited, 12 are expected to make the team.
NEW FACES FROM THE BENCH The Beach brought in two new assistant coaches this summer in coaching veteran Pat Charity and former 49er Charel Bailey. They add to Associate Head Coach Tuonisia Turner, who enters her seventh year. A veteran of 20 years of coaching experience, Charity spent the previous season as an assistant at UNLV. Bailey returns to The Beach for her first season as a Division-I assistant. Bailey averaged 7.6 points and 6.1 rebounds, starting 93 games in her career.
READY TO TAKE CHARGE Post players senior Glory Johnson (Phoenix, AZ) and sophomore Jayme Connors (Las Vegas, NV) are expected to take charge this season, returning as the team's top two scorers. The two combined for 17 points and nearly 10 rebounds per game in their first seasons at The Beach. Johnson shot 55%. Connors was named to the Big West's All-Freshman Team behind a 47% clip.
SHARP SHOOTERS Jinga Gosschalk (Amsterdam, Holland) and Lauren Bull (Rockford, IL) made up 70% of the team's three-pointers last season, as both return for the 2002-03 season. Gosschalk (pronounced Haws-hall-ik) shot 40% from beyond the arc, just missing out on ranking in the Big West's top-five, while Bull hit 30% of her three's.
EXPERIENCE AT GUARD Starting point guard Candice Wilson (Sacramento) and key resevere Christina Mack (Phoenix, AZ) give The Beach experience in the backcourt. Redshirt freshman Sarah Stout (Orlando, FL), at 6-5, is the 49ers tallest player in 2002-03, joining Jayme Connors, Denise Hagen, CeCe Rush (6-3), Glory Johnson (6-2) and Lauren Bull (6-0). Petra Glaser, at 6-6, will redshirt this season.
