Long Beach State Beats Love & Basketball 77-68 Strong Second Half Lifts Beach in Exhibition Play November 17, 2002
LONG BEACH, CA — The Long Beach State women's basketball team beat Love and Basketball (L & B) 77-68 in a women's basketball exhibition game at The Pyramid on Sunday afternoon. Long Beach State women's basketball opens up their season Saturday, November 23 against the University of San Diego at 1:00pm in The Pyramid. Rebounds keyed Long Beach State's second half, out-rebounding L & B 32-17 in the second half. The Beach picked up 17 of their 23 offensive boards in the second half. Long Beach took their first lead of the half with 11:35 in the game off of Lauren Bull's three-pointer to make it 48-46, as the 49ers never looked back. The Beach extended their lead to 58-50, going on a 26-10 run, all in the second half. Candice Wilson (Sacramento, CA) led LBSU with 19 points, and added three assists and two rebounds. Jayme Connors (Las Vegas, NV) added 12 points, five rebounds and one assist, while Lauren Bull (Riverdale, MD) added 11 points, four assists and three rebounds. Glory Johnson (Phoenix, AZ) led the team with seven rebounds, and added ten points. LBSU shot 48% for the game. Mary Apiafi led Love and Basketball with 15 points and seven rebounds, while Denise Woods and Elena Adams each added ten points. Love and Basketball shot 35%. L & B battled back to within one point, 60-59, at 5:39, but Long Beach went on a 8-0 run to stretch their lead to 68-59 with 3:14 left in the game. The Beach gave up eight unanswered points at the end of the half and went into the locker room down 40-32. LBSU shot 48%, while L & B shot 50%. The 49ers tied the game at 30-30 with 7:23 left in the half off of a three-pointer by Candice Wilson. L & B had led 30-23, with 10:48 to go in the half. The Beach took their first lead of the game, 10-9, with 15:43 left in the first half. Love and Basketball recaptured the lead, 11-10 with 15:17 left in the half off of a two-point basket by Allah-mi Basheer. |
