Beach Tie Idaho 2-2 in Double Overtime 49ers Can Not Hold On to 2-0 Lead
MOSCOW, ID-- Mackenzie Blechel's (Forestville, CA) shot sailed wide with 10 seconds left in regulation, as Long Beach State (3-6-3, 1-0-1 BWC) were unable to pick up their second straight victory to start conference play, tying host Idaho (2-6-3, 0-1-1 BWC) 2-2 in double overtime.
Idaho mounted a fierce rally with 12 minutes left, scoring twice to tie it at 2-2, after LBSU had led virtually from wire to wire.
Natalie Messina (Santa Rosa) scored first for Long Beach in the seventh minute with a long shot from the right sideline into the left side of the net. Blechel assisted on the goal to give the 49ers a 1-0 lead. In the 29th minute Allison Reeves (Lakewood, CA) passed to Lauren Doffing (San Diego, CA) who put it in from two yards out and gave LBSU a 2-0 lead.
The Beach outshot Idaho, 23-to-13, but Idaho's two goalies Jenell Miller (who allowed both first half goals) and Lindsay Smith combined for nine saves.
Idaho rallied late in the game when Laura Humphreys scored in the 78th minute on a rebound off the Long Beach goalie Meghan Hartwyk (Los Alamitos) to cut the deficit to 2-1. Adriane Kehl added the second goal for the Vandals in the 81st minute to tie it at 2-2.
The Beach will play at Saint Mary's on Thursday at 3 p.m. to end their three-match roadtrip, before returning home on Sunday, October 13 at 1 p.m. by hosting UC Irvine.
