49ers Open Up Big West with Win Beach Defeats Utah State 3-1, Head to Idaho Sunday
LOGAN, UT-- Long Beach State women's soccer (3-6-2, 1-0-0) used three second half goals to win their Big West Conference opener Friday afternoon, defeating host Utah State (6-4-2, 0-1-0) 3-1. It was the second straight season the 49ers have opened up Big West play with a win, both under Head Coach Peter Reynaud. The three goals in the second half, were the most goals in the second frame since October 14, 2000, when the 49ers scored three on Pacific. LBSU is now 3-2-2 over their last seven contests after an 0-4-0 start. The Beach have now scored three goals in a half, three times this season, all over the last seven games.
First team All-Big West selection Diana Sanguinetti (Stevenson Ranch, CA) gave The Beach a 2-1 lead after finding the back of the net at 52:32. Senior Sarah Gamet (El Cajon) added an exclamation point at 77:30, with her third goal of the season. USU took a 1-0 lead at the half, but then tied it themselves at 1-1 on an own goal at 49:46.
Goalie Hannah Cochrun (Irvine, CA), in her first start since the opener, made six saves and allowed one goal over 90 minutes to pick up the win. The Beach travel to Idaho on Sunday for a match at an earlier than scheduled 10 a.m. start.
