49ers Suffer First Conference Loss Cal Poly Remains Undefeated, Slipping By Beach 2-1
SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA-- Sarah Aguilar (Temecula) tied the game early in the second half, but the Mustangs (11-5, 5-0 BWC) were able to slip by Long Beach State (5-8-4, 3-1-2 BWC) 2-1, and give the 49ers their first conference loss of the season.
Stephanie Haden scored the game-winner, at 67:12, off a cross from 15 yards out, sent to her from Sarah Squire. Aguilar's goal, at 47:57, a seven-yard shot off a rebound in the penalty box, tied the game at 1-1. Last year's Big West Conference Defensive Player of the Year, Brooke Flamson, score the match's first goal, at 20:13, on a free kick to give Cal Poly a 1-0 lead. Cal Poly outshot The Beach 12-to-5. The 49ers 3-0-2 start to a Big West season was the best start in the school's five-year history. The Beach will try to get back on the winning track on Sunday, when they play at UC Santa Barbara, on Sunday evening at 7 p.m. The Beach return home for their final two regular season home matches on November 1 and 3. |
