Curry Earns Big West Weekly Honor Junior's Accomplishments Led to Two Wins Last Week
LONG BEACH, CA-- Long Beach State junior forward Abie Curry (Chico, CA/Pleasant Valley HS) was named the Big West Conference's Player of the Week, after leading The Beach to two victories over the previous top two teams in the conference.
Curry tapped in the game-winner from five yards out with 22 seconds left on Friday, October 18, as the 49ers upset No. 25-ranked and defending Big West Champion CS Fullerton 2-1. The win was believed to be the first victory over a ranked opponent in the program's five-year history.
On Sunday with the score tied 1-1 with UC Riverside, Curry streaked towards the goal in the 82nd minute, only to be knocked down 10 yards from the net. The ensuing penalty kick by Diana Sanguinetti gave LBSU a 2-1 win.
Curry is the team leader in goals (7), assists (2) and points (16) this season and is on the verge of rewriting the 49er record books. Her 10 career goals ties Jennifer Reott (1998-2000) for the franchise record, while her 22 career points is three away from Kelli Barrett's (1998-2000) two-year old record. Earlier this season, Curry broke two single-game records with three goals and six points against Nevada.
LBSU, at 3-0-2 in the Big West, is one of three undefeated teams in conference play. The other two, Cal Poly (4-0-0) and UC Santa Barbara (3-0-1), host the 49ers this weekend on Friday and Sunday, respectively. The Beach are 5-7-4 overall. |
