BEACH TO PLAY IN FINAL REGULAR SEASON ROAD MATCHES WEEKLY RELEASE (PDF) UP THE CENTRAL COAST The 49ers (5-7-4, 3-0-2 BWC), one of three remaing undefeated teams in Big West play, will play the other two this weekend when they travel up the Central Coast. WEEK'S TOP HONOR Junior Abie Curry earned her first BWC Player of the Week honor, after her play led to victories over CSF and UCR, teams who had entered the previously week undefeated and 1-2 in the BWC standings. Full Story
LAST WEEK The Beach picked up two wins last weekend over defending Big West Champion and No. 25-ranked CS Fullerton on Friday before defeating UC Riverside on Sunday. Both tallies were 2-1. The two opponents had entered the week, undefeated and 1-2 in the BWC standings. Against the Titans, Abie Curry's goal with 22 seconds left gave LBSU the victory. Kristin Travis had put The Beach in front 1-0 in the 22nd minute. On Sunday, Diana Sanguinetti's penalty kick in the 83rd minute proved to be the game-winner. Allison Reeves scored her first career goal in the 26th minute to give the Niners a 1-0 lead.
AT THE HELM Veteran coach Peter Reynaud (CS Hayward ‘72) is in his second year as head coach. Now in his 21st season as a head coach, Reynaud is 237-127-29. With 237 victories, Reynaud ranks fourth amongst activie coaches in wins.
RANKED WIN When Abie Curry (Chico) found the back of the net with 22 seconds left against CS Fullerton, it was believed to be the 49ers first-ever win over a ranked opponent in the program's five year history.
PUTTING THE BEACH ON TOP Kristin Travis (Davis) twice gave the 49ers early leads last weekend. Agaisnt the Titans, Travis' shot from 10 yards out, off a pass from Sarah Gamet (El Cajon) giving LBSU a 1-0 lead. On Sunday, Travis along with Diana Sanguinetti (Stevenson Ranch) were part of a give-and-go to Allison Reeves (Lakewood), giving the 49ers a 1-0 lead over UC Riverside. The Beach have led in four of five Big West contests this year.
RIGHT PLACE, AT THE RIGHT TIME Abie Curry (Chico) was in the right place at the right time this weekend, tapping in Shanna Wender's (Fresno) pass on Friday, before being knocked down in the 82nd minute on Sunday. The ensuing penalty kick, by Diana Sanguinetti, proved to be the game-winner.
COCHRUN STOPS THE SHOTS Goalie Hannah Cochrun (Irvine) picked up a season-high seven saves on Sunday against UC Riverside. Twice during the contest, Cochrun stopped potential Highlander goals--one with a diving stop, another by punching the ball out of the zone. Cochrun is 3-0-1 in Big West contests.
SANGUINETTI GETS ON THE BOARD Diana Sanguinetti (Stevenson Ranch), whose play in the backfield has helped limit opponents to one or fewer goals in five of the last six games, got on the scoreboard on Sunday. Sanguinetti assisted on the team's first goal, before taking the eventual game-winning PK 60 minutes later. Sanguinetti has a team-best five points in Big West play.
CURRY READY TO BREAK SOME VINYL Junior Abie Curry (Chico) is on verge of breaking two LBSU career marks. Curry, with 10 goals, is tied for the school-record with Jennifer Reott (1998-2000), and with 22 points, is tied for second all-time, just three points away from tying Kelli Barrett's (1998-2000) two year old mark.
LET'S PLAY 110 MINUTES The 49ers have played in five overtime matches this season, one away from the school-record set last year. The Beach have also finished a match tied, four times this season, a school-record, breaking the 2000 team which finished in a tie three times.
SCHEDULE TOUGH AS NAILS The Beach's non-conference schedule is racking up to be one of the toughest in the country. Entering the week, opponents have a combined winning percentage of .595 (88-60-13). Four opponents already have 10 wins, including Navy who remains undefeated (12-0-4). Eight of the 11 opponents have winning records.
ALL-TOURNAMENT SELECTIONS Abie Curry (Chico), Sarah Gamet (El Cajon), Diana Sanguinetti (Stevenson Ranch) and Natalie Messina (Santa Rosa) were named all-Ohana Shootout in mid-September. Lauren Doffing (San Diego) was named to the Boilermaker Challenge Cup All-Tournament team in early-September.
BARRAGAN ENDS CAREER Marissa Barragan (Long Beach/Poly HS) suffered her second knee injury in as many years, ending her LBSU career. She ended her career with 10 points and eight goals. Her 55 career shots ranks fifth all-time. She started two games in 2002.
YOUNG AND TALENTED Of the 15 returning lettermen, eight were starters last year. Of the team's eight starters, five have earned all-conference honors. Diana Sanguinetti (Stevenson Ranch) was a first team pick, while Allison Wiegand (Modesto) was a second team selection in 2001. Abie Curry (Chico, CA), Becky Ricci (San Diego) and Shana Wender (Fresno) were honorable mention All-BWC.
BIG WEST COACHES POLL CS Fullerton was picked to repeat as BWC champions with 99 points, followed by UCSB (81 points), Cal Poly (80), UC Irvine (65), Pacific (56), CS Northridge (50), LBSU (49), Idaho (33), Utah State (24) and UC Riverside (13).
