Sanguinetti's PK Keeps Beach Undefeated 49ers Rolling in Big West Play, Now 3-0-2
LONG BEACH, CA-- Long Beach State women's soccer (5-7-4, 3-0-2 BWC) continue to find ways to win, as Diana Sanguinetti's (Stevenson Ranch) penalty kick in the 83rd minute gave The Beach a 2-1 victory over visiting UC Riverside (9-6-1, 3-2-1), as the 49ers remained undefeated in Big West play at 3-0-2.
"I just saw that their goalie, Kate Blank, was going left, so I went right," said Sanguinetti, who added an assist on the team's first goal of the afternoon. "We were so high from the Fullerton win on Friday, we were just glad we were able to finish. It felt great to get two in a row this weekend."
The 49ers, who upset No. 25-ranked CS Fullerton on Friday, has led in four of their five Big West contests. LBSU is off their best start in BWC play in the program's five-year history.
The winning score was set up after Abie Curry (Chico), who scored the winning goal on Friday, dribbled into the penalty box and was knocked down by a Highlander defender. Sanguinetti then took the penalty kick and scored at 82:11.
"I thought it truly was a gutsy performance today. We were tired and a little beat up," said Head Coach Peter Reynaud. "To go 2-0 this weekend, we couldn't be happier."
Kristin Travis (Davis, CA), who scored the team's first goal on Friday, helped The Beach go up 1-0 on Sunday. On a give and go, Sanguinetti passed it up the left side to Travis who sent it towards freshman Allison Reeves (Lakewood, CA) who proceeded to fire it in from five yards out at 25:33.
LBSU goalie Hannah Cochrun (Irvine, CA), who ended the match with a season-high seven saves, twice stopped potential goals in the 31st and 52nd minutes. Ashlee Stephens (Temecula, CA) fired a shot from 10 yards out in the 31st minute, which took a diving save from Cochrun to stop. Then in the 52nd minute, Cochrun's punched Allison Stone's (Encino, CA) shot out of the zone after it was headed for the right corner.
Kristi Tanaka (Torrance, CA) tied the game at 1-1, at 79:19, sending a shot from 35 yards out which avoided traffic and went in.
The Beach travel up the Central Coast next weekend with UCSB and Cal Poly.
