49ERS HOST FULLERTON, UC RIVERSIDE IN BW SHOWDOWNS WEEKLY RELEASE (PDF) 49ERS HOST TWO The 49ers (3-7-4, 1-0-2 BWC) will close out a three-match homestand this weekend by hosting defending Big West Champion and No. 25-ranked CS Fullerton (10-1-1, 4-0-0 BWC) on Friday at 3 p.m. before hosting UC Riverside (9-4-1, 3-0-1 BWC) on Sunday at 1 p.m. The Titans (1st) and Highlanders (2nd) are currently 1-2 in the Big West standings, and one of six, including the Niners, who remain undefeated in Big West play HOST #25 CS FULLERTON OCT. 18 | 3 p.m. RECORD: 10-1-1, 4-0-0 BWC (1st) Quick Kicks: The Titans, ranked No. 25 in the latest national rankings, have won all four Big West contests this season... CSF is the defending champion... Fullerton has won seven in a row, having tied Washington back on September 15... Kandace Wilson leads the club with six goals and 13 points, while Erica Jacalone (8) and Allison Bowman (7) also rank amongst the team leaders in points... goalie Karen Bardsley ranks third in the conference in goals against average with an 0.83. SERIES: Fullerton has won three out of the four meetings, winning the last two in a row, including a 1-0 win last year... all of the matches have been decided by one goal. LAST WEEK Long Beach State played in consecutive overtime matches last week, losing 1-0 at Saint Mary's on Thursday in the first overtime before coming to a draw with UC Irvine, 1-1, after two overtimes on Sunday. Allison Wiegand scored the team's only goal in the 70th minute with a header sent into the penalty box from Alexandra Rowinski.
AT THE HELM Veteran coach Peter Reynaud (CS Hayward ‘72) is in his second year as head coach. Now in his 21st season as a head coach, Reynaud is 235-127-29. With 235 victories, Reynaud ranks fourth amongst activie coaches in wins.
LET'S PLAY 110 MINUTES The 49ers have played in five overtime matches this season, one away from the school-record set last yea. LBSU has played in overtime in each of the last three. Over the last three, The Beach have tied both Big West contests, Idaho (2-2) and UC Irvine (1-1) and lost in the first overtime at Saint Mary's 1-0.
PLAYING TO A DRAW The Beach have also finished a match tied, four times this season, a school-record, breaking the 2000 team which finished in a tie three times.
BALANCED ATTACK The 49ers offensive has come from a variety of sources. Abie Curry (Chico) leads the club with 14 points (6 Goals, 2 Assists), as 14 players have tallied at least one point on the season--10 different players have scored goals, and 10 players have had an assist.
AMONGST BIG WEST LEADERS With a team-best six goals and two assists on the season, junior Abie Curry (Chico) ranks in the top-10 in three different Big West categories. The forward is tied for seventh in goals, tied for eighth in points and 10th in shots per game with 2.07 per contest.
SCHEDULE TOUGH AS NAILS The 49ers schedule, including No. 25-ranked CS Fullerton this week, will feature four ranked or previously ranked oppoents who have a combined winning percentage of .566 (132-101-26). Amongst non-conference opponents, the unranked Mids of Navy remain undefeated at 10-0-4, while previous top-25 Pepperdine (10-1-2) and No. 16-ranked Purdue (9-3-1) also have superior records amongst non-conference foes. Of the 11 non-conference opponents, nine have a .500 or better record. The team has also played in an exhibition against the Mexican National Team.
CURRY'S HAT TRICK Abie Curry (Chico) became the first player in 49er history to score three goals in a game, when she did so against Nevada on September 29. The junior, with six points, also broke Kelli Barrett's five-year old single-game record, and is one of only seven player to have six or more shots in a game.
ALL-TOURNAMENT SELECTIONS Four 49ers were named to the Hawaii's Ohana Shootout All-Tournament team in mid-September. Abie Curry (Chico) scored two goals and added an assist, Sarah Gamet (El Cajon) added a goal; while Diana Sanguinetti (Stevenson Ranch) and Natalie Messina (Santa Rosa) helped the defense allow just one goal over 200 minutes. Lauren Doffing (San Diego) was named to the Boilermaker Challenge Cup All-Tournament team in early-September.
BARRAGAN ENDS CAREER Marissa Barragan (Long Beach/Poly HS) suffered her second knee injury in as many yearsending her LBSU career. She ended her career with 10 points and eight goals. Her 55 career shots ranks fifth all-time. She started two games in 2002.
YOUNG AND TALENTED Of the 15 returning lettermen, eight were starters last year. Of the team's eight starters, five have earned all-conference honors. Diana Sanguinetti (Stevenson Ranch) was a first team pick, while Allison Wiegand (Modesto) was a second team selection in 2001. Abie Curry (Chico, CA), Becky Ricci (San Diego) and Shana Wender (Fresno) were honorable mention All-BWC.
BIG WEST COACHES POLL CS Fullerton was picked to repeat as BWC champions with 99 points, followed by UCSB (81 points), Cal Poly (80), UC Irvine (65), Pacific (56), CS Northridge (50), LBSU (49), Idaho (33), Utah State (24) and UC Riverside (13). LBSU went 4-11-2 and 3-5-1 in the Big West for sixth place in 2001. |
