Beach Tie Irvine in Heated Big West Match Wiegand Ties it in 70th Minute, 49ers Remain Undefeated
LONG BEACH, CA-- Long Beach State women's soccer (3-7-4, 1-0-2) remained undefeated in Big West play, tying UC Irvine (5-6-1, 2-0-1) 1-1 in a heated Big West Conference showdown on Sunday.
Allison Wiegand's (Modesto, CA) header at 69:43 proved to the day's final goal, as the sophomore sent the ball in from three yards out after Alexandra Rowinski (Los Angeles, CA) sent it towards the penalty box.
"Considering we're playing without three starters, I thought we did pretty well," said Head Coach Peter Reynaud, referring to Marissa Barragan who suffered a season-ending knee injury early in the season, Marcia Rewoldt, who was in street clothes due to injury and Diana Sangunietti, who left the game early in the second half due to a collison. "We had our chances to score, but were just not able to capitalize."
Hayley McNallan (Tacoma, WA) gave the Anteaters a 1-0 lead at 56-12, taking a pass from Laci Fults (Lancaster, CA) and scoring from four yards out. The Beach had their opportunities in the first half, controling the ball in their end for much of the first half, outshooting UCI 8-to-3 in the first frame, which each shot just missing.
"We played a great first half," said Reynaud. "We had a ton of chances, we were just not able to finish."
The 49er defense survived seven corner kicks from UCI and five overtime shot to finish with their fourth tie and fifth overtime game of the season.
LBSU is next in action when they host CS Fullerton next Friday at 3 p.m. The Anteaters will host UC Riverside on Friday as well.
