San Diego State Shuts Down LBSU Offense Aztecs Win 3-0, 49ers Gear Up for Big West Play This Weekend
LONG BEACH, CA-- San Diego State (7-2-0) shutout a 49er offense which had put forth 11 goals over their previous three games, defeating host Long Beach State (2-5-0) 3-0 in the team's final non-conference home game before the Big West Conference season begins this weekend.
The Beach had entered the match, with a 2-1-2 record over its previous five games. LBSU had outscored their opponents 11-1 over its previous three games. The Aztecs are the seventh team with a winning record to play against LBSU, as opponents are a combined 53-31-12 this season.
Arinda Alvarez (Chula Vista) took a pass from Brianna Weymouth, at 34:06, and dribbled down before shooting and scoring from 25 yards out to give SDSU a 1-0 lead. The 49ers outshot SDSU in the first half, 8 to 3, but were shutdown by goalie Stephanie Pearson's (Los Gatos, CA), who had three first half saves and six total stops.
The Aztecs added two goals in the second half, both from Nicole Findlay (Fairfield, CA), the first at 66:10 from amanda Swiader (Virginia Beach, CA) and the second three minutes later, at 69:00, from Michele Wagner (Clovis, CA).
The 49ers open up Big West play this weekend, on the road, at Utah State on Friday, and at Idaho on Sunday, before traveling to Saint Mary's on October 10.
