MENS GOLF BEGINS SPRING SEASON AT PING-ARIZONA INTERCOLLEGIATE
Long Beach, CA--The Long Beach State men's golf team will begin the Winter/Spring portion of its schedule on February 4-5 competing at the PING-Arizona Intercollegiate at The Raven at Sabino Springs. Eleven of the 20 teams in the field participated in last years NCAA Championships.
One of the finest college golf events in the nation, the 2002 PING-Arizona Intercollegiate is a 54-hole event, which will be contested at The Raven at Sabino Springs, a par 71, 6,900-yard layout. Thirty-six holes will be played on Monday, Feb. 4 with play scheduled to being at 8:00 am MST. The second round will get underway at approximately 1:00 pm. The final 18 holes will start at 8:00 am on Tuesday, Feb. 5.
Seven of the teams in the field are currently ranked in the Precept/GCAA Top-25 Coaches Poll. The following teams are scheduled to compete: Arizona State, BYU, California, UC Irvine, Fresno State, Oklahoma State, Long Beach State, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oregon, Oregon State, Pepperdine, South Carolina, SMU, Stanford, Tulsa, UCLA, USC, Washington and host Arizona.
The 49ers had some strong showings in the fall portion of their schedule. LBSU finished fourth, out of 14 teams, at the Northwest Collegiate Classic in Lebanon, OR on September 10-11. Nick Seymour and Robert Sul both tied for 19th place overall with 215's. The 49ers also finished fourth at the Countrywide Home Loans Intercollegiate at Wood Ranch Golf Club in Simi Valley, CA. Sul and Tyler Mays both shot a 220 to tie for 16th place. At the 2001 49er Collegiate Classic at Zaharias Golf Course at Industry Hills (Nov. 9-10), The Beach finished in eighth place out of 17 teams and Mays led the 49er individuals by finishing seventh with a 219.
The next meet for the 49er men will be on March 7-8 when they compete at the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate at La Purisima Golf Course in Lompoc, California.
